These sentiments were shaken in 2018 after revelations against Harvey Weinstein, which propelled a #MeToo movement in France. French feminists hailed a long overdue rejection of the idea that seduction à la Strauss-Kahn was acceptable. But not everyone agreed. One hundred French women, including actress Catherine Deneuve and libertine writer Catherine Millet, signed an open letter defending men’s “freedom to bother women,” which they said was “indispensable to sexual freedom.” The letter was seen as a repudiation of Anglo-Saxon morality and puritanism. … [Read more...] about This French writer operated openly as a pedophile for decades. “Bush was up and down, but it’s hard to believe that this was the pugnacious fighter his campaign promised to deliver ahead of the debate. Perhaps his most passionate moment came in defense of his brother, former President George W. Bush. But even that was bumpy: He claimed that his brother ‘kept America safe’ from terror, overlooking 9/11, the one important moment at which Bush did not prevent an attack. Jeb Bush also still doesn’t seem to have a good answer to questions about how he differs from his brother and father, nine months into his candidacy. That’s a problem, given the low esteem in which those two administrations are held by both conservative activists and the general population. Raising his voice for what was clearly intended to be a strong finish, Bush flubbed his lines. This just isn’t a format that works well for him.” —David Graham, The Atlantic … [Read more...] about The Key Moments of the Second GOP Presidential Debate
An instance of how this harassment by police officers can play out in real life was demonstrated in England’s highest court last week, when a man who had made jokes about transgenderism online and was visited by a police officer over it won his case against Humberside Police. Harry Miller, a former policeman himself, was told by an officer that he was being visited because the force wanted to “check his thinking” over the non-criminal tweets. … [Read more...] about BBC Warns It Has ‘Reported’ People Critical of Poem About ‘Non-Binary’ Haircut Struggles
I was in Crystal City — I’m sorry, I mean National Landing — a week ago. What a gray, dreary, soul-sapping, concrete maze of boring low-slung office buildings, chain stores, and malls. Think of the architecture of your average multistory parking lot in an airport, and remove any trace of character. Bingo! Despite Crystal City’s name, there appears to be little meth around, although, given the environment, I can see why it might be a temptation. The place has two Marriotts and three Hiltons, although you’d be hard-pressed to tell any of them apart. It’s also quite densely built, and I have yet to see actual plans for remaking it into something airy or spacious or beautiful. And it would surely need a massive makeover to appeal to the woke, wealthy, and whiny iGen-ers to move in. … [Read more...] about What Happens If Americans Stop Trusting the System?
In a sealed motion, Stone’s attorneys asked the judge last week to dismiss the case. The basis for that request has not been made public, but one of Stone’s lawyers said in court Tuesday that it “goes to the heart of the case and is such a fundamental issue.” Stone’s lawyers wanted Jackson to delay the sentencing until she could rule on their motions for a new trial. She refused. … [Read more...] about Federal judge criticizes Trump as she sentences Roger Stone to 40 months in prison
