NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — When the coronavirus pandemic hit, many with other conditions had to delay, stop or change their care. Report: Senate Democrats to ‘Fully Subsidize’ Employer Healthcare Coverage, Including Illegal Immigrants
Senate Democrats are preparing to fully underwrite COBRA subsidies for laid-off workers in their version of the $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief bill, which would also aid illegal immigrants, according to a report from Politico . After the House passed the Democrats’ $1.9 trillion coronavirus bill on partisan lines, Senate Democrats are now preparing their version of the mammoth legislation. Politico reported that Senate Democrats want to increase the COBRA subsidies to help laid-off workers so that they can continue to stay on their employer-provided healthcare plan rather than shop for a plan on the Affordable Care Act (ACA) exchanges. The House version of the legislation allowed for subsidies to pay for 85 percent of COBRA premiums to laid-off workers, including illegal immigrants. The Senate Democrat version would reportedly increase the subsidies to 100 percent of premiums, which would cost roughly $15 billion. Politico wrote that this potential increase in … [Read more...] about Report: Senate Democrats to ‘Fully Subsidize’ Employer Healthcare Coverage, Including Illegal Immigrants
COVID recovery requires addressing economic inequities
Since the earliest days of the COVID-19 pandemic, Congress has treated people’s physical health and economic health as separate and distinct. While legislators would never think of cutting off free access to COVID treatment and vaccinations in the midst of this health crisis, they are quite willing to eliminate or underfund the economic supports that are vital to the survival of individuals, families, and communities. The COVID-19 relief bill Congress passed in December is a perfect illustration. Its provisions expire throughout the year like the seasons. Enhanced federal unemployment insurance ends on March 14 . Tax credits to encourage paid family leave expire on March 31 . Expanded Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits run out on June 30 . Remaining CARES Act funds must be spent by December 31 . Every COVID relief bill has been crafted with temporary supports and arbitrary end dates, chasing an unpredictable virus and an unclear … [Read more...] about COVID recovery requires addressing economic inequities
Officials Recover 150 Missing Children During Operation in Tennessee: ‘We Can’t Give Up’
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) said Wednesday 150 missing children were recovered during a months-long collaborative operation. TBI, the Tennessee Department of Children’s Services, and the U.S. Marshals Service announced the information during a news briefing, WKRN reported . Planning for the effort, dubbed Operation Volunteer Strong, began in fall 2020, and launched on January 4, TBI said in a press release. “After identifying 240 missing children statewide, TBI intelligence analysts compiled thorough information and potential leads on each, which designated law enforcement teams carefully pursued during two-week blitzes in each of Tennessee’s three grand regions,” the release stated. TBI Dir. David Rausch: Our mission- “That guilt shall not escape, nor innocence suffer”-is more than a motto. It reminds us everyday of what really matters. In this operation, it was the innocence of children who may need help or love, a new start or just someone safe to talk … [Read more...] about Officials Recover 150 Missing Children During Operation in Tennessee: ‘We Can’t Give Up’
This Policy Will Let Kids In School Choose Whatever Gender Or Race They Want Without Their Parents’ Knowledge
Delaware is considering adopting a policy that will let young students in school choose whatever name, gender, or race they want under a veil of school protection mandating that the parents not be informed of these decisions unless the student explicitly wishes the parent be included. Drafted by Delaware Gov. John Carney, the anti-discrimination policy states that children from K-12 can choose their own name, identify with whatever race or gender they feel most comfortable with, and even access hormone blockers necessary to transition without the consent of their parents. Regulation 225 “Prohibition Of Discrimination” also indicates that students will be able to join any sports team they choose and can use bathrooms and showers according their chosen identity. Many parents have become outraged over this proposed policy, charging that it violates their right as parents to care for their children without government intrusion. “As a parent, I have fundamental rights to the care, … [Read more...] about This Policy Will Let Kids In School Choose Whatever Gender Or Race They Want Without Their Parents’ Knowledge
