Gordon Engelhardt Evansville Courier & Press Published 12:35 PM EST Nov 16, 2018 EVANSVILLE – With Khristian Lander leading the way, the local Class of 2021 is regarded as one for the ages. It may not rival the state’s Class of 2012, perhaps the most talented class all-time in Indiana, but helps usher in what could be regarded as a new “Golden Age of High School Basketball” in our area. After Reitz was the Class 4A state runner-up in 2015 and Mekhi Lairy led Bosse to 3A runner-up finishes in ’16 and ’18, Lander will carry the mantle individually. A 6-foot-1 sophomore point guard from Reitz, Lander was ranked as the No. 14 sophomore in the nation by 247sports. He is already getting scholarship offers from the likes of Kansas, as well as Indiana, Purdue Illinois, Iowa and Ohio State. “He seems like a great kid and really handles the added attention well,” Mater Dei coach Kurt Wildeman said of Lander. “He was as good … [Read more...] about Is this a new ‘Golden Age’ for Evansville-area boys’ basketball?

It isn't often when Gayle Benson raises her voice, but when she did six years ago with Ken Trahan on the other end of the phone, he responded. Tom Benson, then the New Orleans Saints owner, had just been inducted into the team Hall of Fame during a ceremony two days earlier. Also inducted that day was former running back Deuce McAllister. That Sunday, with McAllister scheduled to sign autographs in the Hall of Fame exhibit before a game at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, Gayle Benson called Trahan, the Hall organizer, to ask if he wanted her husband to join him. "I'm like, 'Oh, he doesn't have to do that,'" Trahan said. That's when the sternness came through. "Would you like him to come to the museum and sign autographs," she asked again, this time with a raised voice, Trahan recalled. "I said, 'Mrs. Benson, if he would like to come, we'd be honored to have him,'" Trahan said. On a night when Tom Benson received his posthumous induction to the Greater New Orleans … [Read more...] about Gayle Benson accepts New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame honor for late husband Tom

But she chose, with no regrets, to teach generations of girls choir and music appreciation at Xavier Prep, continuing until she retired in 2008. The inspiration, she told OffBeat magazine, came from Sister Letitia, one of her teachers, who told her, "You're going to be a teacher." Said Bazzle: "It didn't sound very strange to me because there were teachers in my family... I said, 'Okay,' and didn't think anything of it at all. She saw in me what I am." … [Read more...] about The singing New Orleans schoolteacher with A-plus pipes
