Extreme heat this year has triggered wildfires, drought and melting glaciers. Less expectedly, it’s also revealed some weird and dark things about our past — shipwrecks, corpses, ghost villages, ornamental gardens and ancient cities. Here’s a look at some of those discoveries. Roman remains Italy’s drought has revealed artifacts from World War II and a glimpse of life under Nero. Months without rain and an earlier-than-usual halt in flows from melting snow in the Alps depleted the River Po — Italy’s longest river — to its lowest level in 70 years. The dried-up riverbed revealed previously hidden World War II-era wreckage such as a German tank and cargo ships. In Rome, meanwhile, drought sapped the River Tiber and unveiled a bridge that’s thought to have been built during Emperor Nero’s rule. This summer’s extremely hot and dry conditions in Italy forced the government to declare a state of emergency in July. Ukraine Forces Say They Wiped Out Elite Wagner HQ in Donbas
An important base for the skilled but sketchy Wagner Group , the private paramilitary helping Vladimir Putin wage war in Ukraine , has been struck, according to sources from both the Ukrainian and Russian sides. It is unclear how many fighters were injured or killed in the attack, thought to have been carried out over the weekend using a High Mobility Artillery Rocket System, or HIMARS, which is made for the U.S. military and has been donated to Ukraine. “There is no more Wagner HQ in Popasna,” Ukrainian MP Oleksiy Honcharenko wrote on Facebook, referring to the location of the camp in the Luhansk region of Russian-controlled Ukraine. “Thank you, HIMARS and the Armed Forces of Ukraine!” The Kremlin does not confirm the existence of the group, or its role as defined by Western intelligence sources, who say most of the fighters are recruited from Russian prisons. Some reports suggest that convicted murderers are being pardoned in exchange for six months of combat in … [Read more...] about Ukraine Forces Say They Wiped Out Elite Wagner HQ in Donbas

What ‘Game of Thrones’ Taught Us About Nuclear Devastation
“Atomic bombs are primarily a means for the ruthless annihilation of cities.” Famed physicist Leo Szilard wrote those words in 1945, entreating President Harry Truman to give Japan a chance to surrender before using the nuclear weapons Szilard had been instrumental in developing. His words rang in my head as Tyrion tried and failed to convince Daenerys to spare the surrendering King’s Landing from her dragon’s fire in the latest Game of Thrones episode, “The Bells.” There is a significant difference between weapons of war and nuclear weapons. The former target their opponent’s military force. The latter yield absolute and indiscriminate power to kill civilians. Harry Truman admitted that nuclear weapons were created for the destruction of cities when he said, “You have got to understand that this isn’t a military weapon. It is used to wipe out women and children and unarmed people, and not for military uses.” In the first seven seasons of Game of Thrones , … [Read more...] about What ‘Game of Thrones’ Taught Us About Nuclear Devastation
