Golf world rallies around Michelle Wie West following Rudy Giuliani’s ‘highly inappropriate’ comments on Steve Bannon podcast
(CNN) The golfing world has rallied around Michelle Wie West following comments made by Donald Trump's former lawyer Rudy Giuliani "objectifying" the five-time LPGA Tour winner. The former New York mayor appeared last Thursday on the 'War Room' podcast hosted by Trump's ex-adviser Steve Bannon and was remembering a round of golf he played with Wie West and the late talk show host Rush Limbaugh at a charity event in 2014. As he recalls it, Limbaugh was complaining about the "paparazzi" and blamed Giuliani, only for the former New York mayor to point out photographers were for the then Wie -- she married Jonnie West, director of basketball operations for the Golden State Warriors in 2019. "On the green is Michelle Wie and she is getting ready to putt," Giuliani said on the podcast on Thursday. "Now Michelle Wie is gorgeous. She's six feet. And she has a strange putting stance. She bends all the way over. And her panties show. And the press was going crazy." ( CBS Los Angeles )- The PGA Tour wraps up its West Coast swing this weekend with a trip to one of the tour’s longest-running courses, Riviera Country Club, for the Genesis Invitational . Opens in a span of 18 months, thus it is called “Hogan’s Alley.” Today the par-71 layout measures 7,322 yards. The famed layout in Pacific Palisades, California, first hosted a tour event in 1929. Tiger Woods’ Victory in Masters a Win for Golf Business
Tiger Woods' victory at the Masters golf tournament on Sunday, his first major victory since 2008, is expected to lift sales for sponsors, broadcasters and golf courses lucky enough to host a tournament with Woods playing. The competition put the 43-year-old back on top of a sport he helped transform 25 years ago. "Tiger sells golf," says Eric Smallwood, president of Apex Marketing Group, a Michigan analytics firm. Apex found that Nike earned $22.5 million worth of brand exposure just from Woods' final round, with Nike's "Swoosh" logo splashed on his hat, shirt, pants and shoes. Nike stock was up about one percent on Monday. Tournament broadcaster CBS Corp saw a ratings bump. Based on preliminary data, the final round of Sunday's tournament was the highest-rated morning golf broadcast since 1986, when CBS started collecting that data. The tournament, which is usually broadcast in the afternoon, was rescheduled to the morning because of weather. CBS has the rights to the PGA … [Read more...] about Tiger Woods’ Victory in Masters a Win for Golf Business
Out of this world: Alan Shepard put golf on moon 50 years ago
Fifty years later, it remains the most impressive bunker shot in the history of golf, mainly because of the location. The moon. Apollo 14 commander Alan Shepard and his crew brought back about 90 pounds of moon rocks on Feb. 6, 1971. Left behind were two golf balls that Shepard, who later described the moon’s surface as “one big sand trap,” hit with a makeshift 6-iron to become a footnote in history. Francis Ouimet put golf on the front page of American newspapers by winning the 1913 U.S. Open. Gene Sarazen put the Masters on the map by holing a 235-yard shot for an albatross in the final round of his 1935 victory. Shepard outdid them all. He put golf in outer space. “He might have put golf on the moon map,” Jack Nicklaus said this week. “I thought it was unique for the game of golf that Shepard thought so much about the game that he would take a golf club to the moon and hit a shot.” Shepard became the first American in space in 1961 as one of NASA’s seven original … [Read more...] about Out of this world: Alan Shepard put golf on moon 50 years ago
