Fall is truly upon us, and we know one thing for sure - it’s only going to get colder. In places where the seasons are always shifting, it can be a bit of a gamble when you’re getting ready to leave the house and you have to pick the right outerwear for the day ahead. What if the coat you throw on is too heavy, and you’re already sweating by the time you climb the stairs to your train platform? What if it’s too light and you are going to freeze on the way home from the grocery store after work? Or, what if you had just the right coat for every cool weather situation? It’s possible! It can take a little bit of investment over the years, but when you build up a nice collection of the right coats, you can achieve the absolute nirvana of stocked-up-ed-ness that lends you an undeniable air of style and ease and cozy-but-not-too-hot-warmth that you’ve always dreamed of. ‘Assassination Nation’: Inside the Transgressive Slasher Giving Teen Women a Voice—and Revenge
Suppose an unknown hacker were to target a sleepy suburb, gathering everything meant to be kept private and unleashing it for public consumption. Presented with these texts, photos, emails, search history—basically an excavated mine of lies and hypocrisies—how would the town react? An opening sequence mocks prudes and pussyfooters with a series of abrasive “trigger warnings:” sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia, violence, gore, weapons. In other moments, the frame is crammed with split-screen Snapchat videos, Reddit chains, and text exchanges, gesturing toward a splintered contemporary youth culture and the performative nature of social media. Of the movie’s myriad ideas and messages, few … [Read more...] about ‘Assassination Nation’: Inside the Transgressive Slasher Giving Teen Women a Voice—and Revenge
He said ‘yes’! Why aren’t more women proposing to their boyfriends?
When I proposed to my partner, Greg, I couldn't get down on one knee because I was floating. My proposal had all the other hallmarks of a grand gesture: Thrilling surprise, romance, ring. We were on a zero-gravity flight, hurtling through the sky, our bodies suspended in air. Taking aim, I floated a small blue box over to Greg. He made a heroic dive, the kind of move you'd see in a Netflix rom-com, and caught it. When he opened it, the ring levitated upward. I asked him to marry me, and he said "Absolutely, yes!" It was the perfect proposal for us, combining our passion for science with our love of adventure. Because gender stereotypes paint men as less willing to commit, they're traditionally the ones to drive heterosexual relationships forward - and that includes popping the question. Some people in our lives wondered why I, the woman, had proposed to him. I proposed to Greg because, contrary to those gendered stereotypes, he was ready for lifelong commitment years before I was. We … [Read more...] about He said ‘yes’! Why aren’t more women proposing to their boyfriends?
