Mass Shooting In Boulder Renews Debate Over Guns In America, Demand For Permits Rise Locally
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The mass shooting in Boulder has renewed the debate over guns in our country. It comes on the heels of the biggest single-day for new gun permits ever in Allegheny County. “Certainly the demand is extremely high,” Chief Deputy Kevin Kraus in the Allegheny County Sheriff’s office said. People stood in line for up to six hours to get a permit to carry a gun. “That was a record day for us we issued 647 firearms licenses to carry,” Chief Deputy Kraus said. The reasons were as varied as the crowd. “I came out so I could carry my gun,” said one woman, “Because I no longer trust this country and the people who are in it.” Another woman added, “We are feeling like we need to be able to protect ourselves.” Kraus doesn’t know how … [Read more...] about Mass Shooting In Boulder Renews Debate Over Guns In America, Demand For Permits Rise Locally
Expert Witness: Preexisting Conditions, Fentanyl Did Not Cause George Floyd’s Death
George Floyd died as a result of a lack of oxygen from being pressed against the pavement with a knee on his neck, a pulmonary critical care expert witness testified Thursday during Derek Chauvin’s murder trial. Dr. Martin Tobin, a specialist at the Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital and Loyola University’s medical school, flatly rejected that Floyd’s preexisting conditions or drug use caused his death. “A healthy person subjected to what Mr. Floyd was subjected to would have died,” Tobin said, describing how Floyd’s breathing was severely constricted as Chauvin and two other Minneapolis Police officers pinned him down on his stomach with his face pressed against the ground and handcuffs restraining his hands behind him. During a 9 1/2 minute graphic presentation of the officer’s actions, Tobin added that Chauvin’s knee was “virtually on the neck” for over 90% of the time. He cited other factors that made it more difficult for Floyd to breathe: the street’s hard asphalt … [Read more...] about Expert Witness: Preexisting Conditions, Fentanyl Did Not Cause George Floyd’s Death
‘Why Not?’: Apple CEO Has ‘Dream’ Of People Voting With Phones
Apple CEO Tim Cook said he could see a future where people vote through their phones in an interview with the New York Times published Monday. The podcast interview was published five days after Cook joined a growing list of business heads criticizing a recent Georgia voting law . “You know, I would dream of [voting on phones], because I think that’s where we live,” Cook told NYT opinion writer Kara Swisher in an episode of the Sway podcast. “We do our banking on phones. We have our health data on phones. We have more information on a phone about us than is in our houses. And so why not?” Swisher and Cook were discussing Cook’s and Apple’ s political engagements and voting rights when Cook made his comments. (RELATED: Big Tech Employees Donated More To Biden’s Campaign Than Any Other Sector) The CEO told Swisher that he believes everyone is having the “wrong conversation” on voting rights. “We should be talking about using technology. … [Read more...] about ‘Why Not?’: Apple CEO Has ‘Dream’ Of People Voting With Phones
Apple CEO Blasts Georgia Voting Law, But Has Stayed Silent On Chinese Repression
Apple CEO Tim Cook on Thursday criticized a new voting law in Georgia, even though the multi-trillion-dollar tech company has repeatedly accommodated the Chinese government’s requests to censor content, including during pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong. “Apple believes that, thanks in part to the power of technology, it ought to be easier than ever for every eligible citizen to exercise their right to vote,” Cook told Axios in an interview about the Georgia bill, which was signed into law on Friday. Democrats and several major corporations have blasted the Georgia law, alleging that it will make it harder for Georgians, especially minorities, to vote. President Joe Biden has called it “Jim Crow in the 21st century,” in reference to segregation-era laws that discriminated against African-Americans in the South. Opponents have been especially critical of a provision that requires an ID to obtain an absentee ballot. Defenders of the bill have noted that other states … [Read more...] about Apple CEO Blasts Georgia Voting Law, But Has Stayed Silent On Chinese Repression
