The market for existing homes in Wisconsin is off to a good start this year, with January sales and prices increasing from the same time in 2017.The Wisconsin Realtors Association said Monday there were 3,971 closings in January, or 2.8% more than 3,862 in January last year. The median price of homes sold in January was $168,500, or 6.8% more than $157,700 in the same month a year ago.The increased sales came despite a short supply of homes on the market.“Tight inventories dominated Wisconsin’s housing market throughout 2017, and that challenge has continued into the first month of the new year,” Peter Sveum, chairman of the Wisconsin Realtors Association, said in a statement.While the supply of homes for sale is tight, jobs are abundant in a strong state economy with low unemployment, the state Realtors organization said. Now, after 24 years, the couple wants to spend more time with their children and on their marriage and pass the Arbor House on to new proprietors who have a similar environmental mission, a knack for hospitality and a love of history. If it were solely up to John Imes, executive director of Wisconsin Environmental Initiative, a nonprofit he helped found in 1996 that advocates for green building, development and clean water practices, the inn would stay in the family. But the day-to-day operations of the property at 3402 Monroe St., part of which dates to 1853, have been all-consuming for Cathie Imes. This Wednesday, on Valentine’s Day, the Assembly Small Business Development Committee will be reviewing Assembly Bill 360, affectionately known as the “Cookie Bill,” which has the potential for Wisconsin to catch up with just about all other states in our nation to enable folks to sell their homemade baked goods. Unfortunately, as it currently stands, Assembly Bill 360 institutes an annual gross sales cap of $10,000, one of the lowest in the country.
