WASHINGTON - Some Native American children fear bullying and harassment so much, they hide their ethnicity at school, according to an education expert. “A lot of Native students feel invisible,” said Katrina Boone, an associate partner at Bellwether Education Partners, a national nonprofit whose mission is to change education and life outcomes for underserved children. Boone said many students have told her they don't feel comfortable letting their teachers know they are Native American because they have “been harassed and bullied, not just by peers, but by teachers in school.” Native American students languish in schools across the country and often face worse outcomes than their white, black and Latino peers, she said. Riverside Teacher’s Aide Who Sexually Abused Girls Gets 20 Years To Life
RIVERSIDE (CBSLA) — A 27-year-old Riverside Unified School District teacher’s aide who sexually abused multiple children over several years was sentenced Friday to 20 years to life in state prison. Last month, Fernando Figueroa plead guilty to three counts of lewd acts on a child under the age of 14, with some victims as young as 9-years-old, and in exchange the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office dropped 22 related charges. During the sentencing, one of the victims — with her mother at her side — detailed the trauma she endured at the hands of Figueroa. “Mr. Fernando sat next to me in the computer lab and started rubbing my thigh,” the girl, identified as C.S., said. “He rubbed all the way up between my legs. Riverside Unified To Pay $6.2M To Settle Suit Alleging It Covered Up Child Molestation By Teacher’s Aide
RIVERSIDE (CBSLA) — The Riverside Unified School District will pay $6.2 million to settle a lawsuit brought by the families of three girls who were allegedly molested by a teacher’s aide, claiming that the district attempted to destroy or doctor records in order to cover up complaints about the suspect. Attorneys for the alleged victims announced Monday that they had reached a settlement regarding the purported actions of 26-year-old Fernando Figueroa, who worked as a technology aide in after school programs at Liberty Elementary School and at a Boys & Girls Club in the city of Redlands. Peabody Looks To Hire Interim School Superintendent By New Year
PEABODY, MA —The Peabody school committee hopes to have an interim superintendent in place when students return after the holiday break on Jan. 2. The school committee met in a closed decision Monday to map out a plan for replacing Superintendent Cara Murtagh and Peabody Veterans Memorial High School Assistant Principal Judie Maniatis, who died within days of one another last month.The school committee's vote Monday raised immediate speculation among parents that the board would tap former superintendent Herb Levine, who served as interim superintendent before Murtagh.
