Is vaccine diplomacy the new ‘soft diplomacy’?
As the United States races to get its citizens vaccinated, there is a parallel vaccine marathon going on in the world in which nations are bartering, trading, giving away and using vaccine doses for more than just public health. The COVID-19 vaccine is the new highly sought-after currency used in exchange for people or things, like a modern day version of trading beads. According to the New York Times , Israel has agreed to finance an undisclosed number of coronavirus vaccines for its enemy Syria, using Russia as a third party cut-out. Under the reported deal, Israel will pay Moscow to send Russian-made Sputnik vaccines to the regime of Bashar al-Assad of Syria in return for the release of a 23-year-old Israeli woman detained since Feb. 2 for entering Syria. ADVERTISEMENT Inevitably, goods of high value get sold, traded and bartered especially in desperate times when everyone needs the same thing and supplies are limited. Think about it: For more than 100 years, oil has … [Read more...] about Is vaccine diplomacy the new ‘soft diplomacy’?

Kraft improves Cadbury offer after sale to Nestle
LONDON (AP) — Kraft Foods Inc. improved its hostile takeover offer for British chocolate and gum maker Cadbury PLC after selling its North American pizza business for $3.7 billion to Nestle, which confirmed it would not make a rival bid. Kraft said it would use the money to increase the proportion of cash in its offer after its deal with Nestle, which includes pizza brands such as Tombstone and Jack’s in the U.S. Nestle, which some had speculated could make its own bid for the Cadbury, ruled itself out of any race to buy the U.K. company. Cadbury shares were down 1.7 percent at 791.50 pence on the London Stock Exchange. Nestle share rose 1.5 percent to 50.95 Swiss francs. Jeremy Batstone-Carr, analyst at Charles Stanley & Co., said Kraft’s move was short of a knockout offer. “Importantly, this offer is not yet said to be final,” he said. “While we note the weakness in Cadbury’s share price on today’s news, implying that the market now views Cadbury’s chance of … [Read more...] about Kraft improves Cadbury offer after sale to Nestle
How to rethink Russia sanctions
Since 2012, Russia has become subject of ever more Western sanctions. Some have been unilateral U.S. sanctions, while Western allies have joined in others. Currently, the United States has about 15 different sanctions programs for Russia, and several others have been proposed. Sensibly, the Biden administration has called for a review of U.S. Russia sanctions. Sanctions should be effective. They should deter, punish and hopefully reverse bad behavior. Narrowly targeted and clearly defined sanctions are usually more effective than broad sanctions that, for example, aim at regime change. The more countries that participate, the more effective sanctions tend to be. Therefore, the Biden administration is right in its intent to return to far-reaching coordination with European allies in its Russia sanctions. The first American sanctions on Russia after the Cold War was the Sergei Magnitsky Rule of Law Accountability Act of 2012. It targets violators of human rights and corruption in … [Read more...] about How to rethink Russia sanctions
