Yvonne Beasley Reno Gazette Journal Published 4:42 PM EST Nov 12, 2018 The Reno Tahoe area was asked to submit a bid for an upcoming Winter Olympics, but has declined the invitation for now. “The potential for a near-term U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in 2030 would not be feasible financially for our region,” said a Monday morning statement from the Reno Tahoe Winter Games Coalition. The move is not about the area’s ability to handle the games, said Jon Killoran of the RTWGC. It’s because a complicated and crowded world sports schedule could take the air out of a local Oympics bid. Los Angeles is hosting the 2028 summer games. Canada and the United States are hosting the FIFA World Cup in 2026. That would leave Reno-Tahoe a too-short window in which to market and gather sponsors for a 2030 Olympic Winter Games, Killoran said Monday. The other two U.S. cities invited to bid for a 2030 games were Denver and Salt Lake City. This all … [Read more...] about Reno-Tahoe won’t submit bid for Winter Olympics, at least for now

Updated 8:27 am CDT, Monday, September 17, 2018 LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — The Japanese city of Sapporo has dropped its bid to host the 2026 Winter Olympics following a recent earthquake. After meeting with Sapporo representatives, the International Olympic Committee said Monday the city, which became the first in Asia to host the Winter Olympics in 1972, will now focus on a bid for the 2030 Games. Japanese officials have said 41 people were killed when an earthquake hit Japan's northern island of Hokkaido, where Sapporo is located, on Sept. 6. Even before the earthquake, Sapporo officials had said they might prefer to focus on 2030. The IOC said in a statement it "expressed its understanding that recovery from the earthquake in the region should be the immediate principle focus but greatly appreciated the continued strong commitment as a future host for the Olympic Winter Games."
