What he does in the shadows. Photo: Sarah Silbiger/Bloomberg via Getty Images Less voluble, less gaffe-prone, more focused: In many ways, President Biden has been a very different political figure than the Joe Biden America has been familiar with for decades. I spoke with national correspondent Gabriel Debenedetti about Biden’s so-far successful communications strategy, and whether it can last. Ben : Our colleague Jonathan Chait wrote this of Joe Biden recently: “Biden’s advantage is that he’s not just nice; he’s also tedious. He is relentlessly enacting an ambitious domestic agenda … while arousing hardly any controversy. There’s nothing in Biden’s vanilla-ice-cream bromides for his critics to hook on to. Republicans can’t stop Biden because he is boring them to death.” This is true. It’s also true that, right now, many Republicans don’t even seem interested in going after Biden, or his policies. Instead, they’re focused on shoehorning whatever grievances they have … [Read more...] about Can Biden’s Low-Key Strategy Work Forever?
Wednesday, FNC host Tucker Carlson opened his program in support of those skeptical of the COVID-19 vaccine, who in some cases have been maligned by politicians, the media, and other aspects of American culture. Carlson said the vaccine was not without some level of risk, and the discussion of that risk was being shut down. Transcript as follows: CARLSON: Here’s a very simple question. We know a lot about the upside of vaccines, we’ve been completely in favor of vulnerable people taking vaccines. But what about the potential risks? You think you would know more about that than you do? We talk a lot about vaccines constantly, not just on this show, but in this … [Read more...] about FNC’s Carlson: Americans Have an ‘Absolute Right’ to Question Vaccine Without Being Silenced, Censored or Mocked
Something subtle, yet powerful is happening in the ultra fast-moving, consumer-savvy world of internet-era marketing. In fact, it’s an idea so new, none of the marketing gurus I approached while writing this piece had even really thought about it. It’s the joyous concept of turning furious Social Justice Warriors to your advantage – and harnessing their rage to make you piles of beautiful dosh. It runs like this. Consumer A is offended by a product, a company or an advertisement for something they find misogynistic/sexist/homophobic/transphobic/racist/sizeist/whatever. Consumer A – an Offendotron who would probably never even buy the product in question – rallies like-minded SJWs via an established, global network of Twitter outrage groups. Next, somebody inexorably starts a shaming Change.org petition, loudly calling for the product to be banned. But here’s the rub: when you accuse a product of being homophobic, or promoting violence against women, or whatever’s on today’s … [Read more...] about Making the Trolls Pay: How One UK Company Made £1 Million in Four Days from Furious Social Justice Warriors
