(CNN) Monday officially marks the final day of Atlantic hurricane season, and it has been one for the record books. 2020 has been undoubtedly a crazy year -- with the Covid-19 pandemic , murder hornets and some of the largest wildfires in recorded history. It seems understandable that hurricane season would also be memorable. This season was forecast to be a busy season. Two of the most well-known and respected entities that forecast their predictions for the upcoming hurricane season are Colorado State University (CSU) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). CSU's Tropical Meteorology Project team predicted an above-average Atlantic hurricane season on April 2. The team forecast 16 named storms, including eight hurricanes. "We were forecasting a well above-average season in April, June and July, and increased that forecast to an extremely active season in August," said Phil Klotzbach, a research scientist at the … [Read more...] about Hurricane season ends historic as predicted by experts back in April

Elsa and Olaf? Characters from the movie ‘Frozen’ could serve as hurricane names this season
(CNN) We are three months from the start of hurricane season -- though the official start date may come earlier this year because hurricanes have occurred outside the traditional season in recent years. And, yes, those famous Disney characters from "Frozen" could really serve as inspiration for hurricane names this year. Three of them -- Ana, Elsa, Olaf -- are on the list of official names in the Atlantic and east Pacific basins, in what could be another active hurricane season. Though it's too early to know definitively, forecasters say a few key elements could determine whether we see another active season similar to last year. The official start of the hurricane season is June 1st, just 100 days away. It only takes one storm to make it a bad year for you, and that's the one to prepare for going into the season. @NWS @NOAA @NOAAComms @NHC_Atlantic @NHC_Pacific https://t.co/3TBiIEfPWT pic.twitter.com/Ud4SMCZ6sK — National … [Read more...] about Elsa and Olaf? Hurricanes are maintaining their strength farther inland as the planet warms, study finds
(CNN) Over the years, scientists have found lots of evidence that hurricanes are becoming more dangerous as the planet heats up. They are rapidly intensifying more often, dumping higher rainfall totals and even moving slower , all because the world's oceans and atmosphere are hotter due to human activity. Now, a new study has identified yet another connection to our warming climate: Hurricanes are maintaining their strength after landfall for much longer, and in turn, exposing populations far inland to damaging winds that they have rarely experienced before. The researchers found that over the past 50 years, the time it takes for a hurricane to weaken after landfall has increased by 94%. Oceans are warming at the same rate as if five Hiroshima bombs were dropped in every second In the late 1960s, a typical hurricane would lose roughly 75% of its intensity in the first day after landfall. But today, that same storm would be … [Read more...] about Hurricanes are maintaining their strength farther inland as the planet warms, study finds

Big Thompson Canyon struck again by tragic flooding
In other places in Colorado, rivers meander through tranquil valleys or stretch out over plains. There is little wiggle room in the narrow and rugged Big Thompson Canyon. In a flood, the river knows one path: through. Early on Sept. 12, floodwaters again swamped the small communities along the Big Thompson and its tributaries, inviting comparisons to the horror that visited the same places in 1976. Here, homes and property are family keepsakes, written down in wills. Families return to favorite campgrounds year after year. Log cabins bear whimsical names — or honor a loved one lost. Firefighters here are not professionals as they are in the city but managers at Ace Hardware and hospital workers. And when disaster strikes and their neighbors need them, they are selfless and brave. “There are a thousand stories here,” said Gary Wamsley, a retired Air Force colonel whose cabin in Cedar Cove weathered the flood. “People associate coming up here with peacefulness, … [Read more...] about Big Thompson Canyon struck again by tragic flooding
