NEW YORK - On election night at Fox News, big red news alerts lit up the small courtyard outside Studio F where Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum were hosting the channel’s midterm coverage. The rain had just let up and Baier, the channel's chief political anchor, sat square-jawed and sober, resembling a Dick Tracy cartoon without the hat. MacCallum, a new presence as an election-night co-anchor (for the 2016 presidential election, Megyn Kelly was in that seat) appeared sharp in a suffragist-appropriate white jumpsuit with perfectly arranged blond hair. This was supposed to be Fox News' star turn - the big day for its journalists. Instead, the previous 24 hours had exposed the spreading fissures at Fox News, which is in the midst of its own version of a civil war, pitting its news anchors against its big-name pundits, who are avid promoters of President Donald Trump. Baier, who has been at Fox for 21 years, says he approaches every day "with horse blinders on.""I don't spend a lot of … [Read more...] about Will Fox News survive as a house united in the era of Trump?
George Clooney. Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty Images As a director, George Clooney’s last four movies have been outright flops. Suburbicon, Monuments Men, Leatherheads and Confessions of a Dangerous Mind all failed to drum up much of a profit at the box office and were met with mixed to negative reviews. Collectively, the recent slump has considerably cooled the A-list star’s reputation as a filmmaker after a hot start to his behind-the-scenes career. Though Clooney has some interesting projects on the horizon, such as an adaptation of Catch-22 for Hulu, it’s fair to say he could use a big screen win as a director. On that note, Deadline reports that he is in early talks with 20th Century Fox to helm Echo, a sci-fi thriller aimed at adults. The story is an original idea that follows a drone specialist who is suffering a psychological crisis: “is he paranoid in suspecting his lover is not who she appears to be, and could she possibly have been … [Read more...] about George Clooney Needs a Hit—Will Fox’s Sci-Fi Thriller ‘Echo’ Deliver?
With time running down, the board of 21st Century Fox has some big decisions to make as it meets on Wednesday to consider Comcast Corp.’s potentially hostile $65 billion offer for its entertainment businesses. The Fox board — which includes 87-year-old media mogul Rupert Murdoch and his sons Lachlan and James — has already agreed to sell the Fox portfolio to the Walt Disney Co. for $52.4 billion in Disney stock. But Comcast has offered 19 percent more in cash, based on Disney’s stock price on the day the Comcast made its offer, and filed paperwork with the Securities and Exchange Commission that could lead to a hostile proxy battle with the Fox board. First steps on Wednesday could be for the Fox board to take Comcast’s offer of $65 billion seriously and agree to share information on its businesses with Comcast. This could lead to negotiations between Comcast and Fox for a deal, say officials with knowledge of the process and an outside expert. The … [Read more...] about Will Fox’s board snub Comcast?
Whether the Mid-American Canoe and Kayak Race on the Fox River takes place Sunday depends on how fast the river is running Thursday morning. As of Wednesday morning, it was too fast, at 2,430 cubic feet per second, said Jim Pilmer, executive director of the Fox Valley Park District. The district runs the event. The district will make its decision at 10 a.m. Thursday, Pilmer said. He estimated the chance of it being canceled as "50/50."Pilmer said it is unsafe to run the race at speeds above 2,100 CFS.The speed could drop by about 100 CFS a day, he said, if there is no additional rain. The race has two events: one that begins in St. Charles, and one that begins in Batavia. It has been canceled in 1974, 1996 and 2004 due to river conditions (too high twice, too low once), and in 2007 due to the reconstruction of a bridge in Batavia. The race began in 1961.Making a decision Thursday gives plenty of notice to participants, some of whom come from out-of-state, Pilmer said, as well as … [Read more...] about Will Fox River be too high, fast for canoe race?
Culture Roseanne ABC fox Although Roseanne got the green light for Season 2 days after the revival series premiered in March, a second season will never air on ABC after the network pulled the plug on the show. But that doesn’t necessarily mean viewers will never get a glimpse of the Conner family again, does it? In light of Roseanne Barr’s racist tweet comparing former Obama-era aide Valerie Jarrett to an ape on Tuesday, ABC Entertainment President Channing Dungey announced in a statement Rosanne was being canceled, effective immediately. “Roseanne’s Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show,” Dungey said. Plenty of people on Twitter praised ABC’s quick and heavy-handed response towards Barr, who, in a since-deleted tweet, suggested Jarrett was what the world would get if “Muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby.” However, some of the … [Read more...] about Will Fox Pick Up ‘Roseanne’?
