Photo: Marcus McDonald Towel choice is intensely subjective — for every full-throated waffle obsessive, there are plenty willing to argue the merits of a flat-weave Turkish set. Still, there are a few characteristics that are vital across the board: No matter the style, a towel needs to dry quickly and stay soft after a couple hundred runs in the wash. To find the ones that are as good-looking as they are durable, we spoke to 24 designers, hoteliers, and shop owners, unearthing the checkered style by textile company Baina preferred by multidisciplinary design-studio founders and decorators (seen above, $110), a mildewproof option that dries so fast it can be used twice a day, and one that has held up through years of “emergency potty-training accidents.” Best overall | Most durable | Best soft | Best colorful | Best mildewproof | Best waffle | Best monogrammable | Best Turkish hammam style | Best patterned | Best … [Read more...] about The 11 Very Best Bath Towels

D.C. Attorney General Lets the Trump Swamp Win Again
The District of Columbia’s attorney general promised accountability for nonprofits that took advantage of the Trump administration’s era of grift. Yet after D.C.’s top prosecutor let the Trump family off easy last month for misusing donor funds, The Daily Beast has discovered yet another recent example of a gentle settlement for executives—with Trumpworld connections—accused of personally enriching themselves with charitable funds. Last year, Attorney General Karl Racine sued the corporation that nearly ruined the United States’ presence at the 2020 World Expo in Dubai. The event presented a lucrative opportunity to represent the nation at the modern World’s Fair, and the State Department initially handed it over to Pavilion USA 2020, a nonprofit started by two political players in Washington. But Racine’s office says it eventually discovered these two men misused their nonprofit to pay themselves handsomely—and dupe well-meaning investors into pouring money into a failed … [Read more...] about D.C. Book World: Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey share their ‘Office’ memories
The Office BFFs: Tales of the Office from Two Best Friends Who Were There By Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey Dey Street Books. 336 pp. $27.99 - - - We could debate all day about what the two most iconic couples from "The Office" - Pam and Jim, and Dwight and Angela - would be doing in 2022. And we certainly will. But it's just as fun to check in on what Jenna Fischer (who played secretary Pam Beesly) and Angela Kinsey (accountant Angela Martin) are doing today. Behind the scenes, the pair formed a best friendship that persists nearly 10 years after the NBC sitcom went off air - and they're probably hanging out in Target's seasonal aisle. They also appreciate a good power walk. "Except Angela stops and gets some sort of pastry," Fischer chided her friend during a recent Zoom interview. "We're still debating this, years later. I don't think it counts as exercise if you get a snack along the way." Kinsey interjected: "I think it does, because I moved my butt to get there." … [Read more...] about Book World: Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey share their ‘Office’ memories
Book World: Deborah Birx’s unseen fight to stop Trump’s covid falsehoods
Silent Invasion By Deborah Birx Harper. 506 pp. $29.99 - - - On April 23, 2020, with the United States in the throes of the first covid-19 wave, President Donald Trump opined that doctors should investigate whether shining ultraviolet light or injecting disinfectant into the body might treat the disease. To back him up, he turned to the White House coronavirus response coordinator, the physician and public health expert Deborah Birx. "Deborah, have you ever heard of that - the heat and the light . . . relative to this virus?" Birx, though visibly uncomfortable, answered politely, "Not as a treatment." She went on to say that fever does help the body fight infection. She managed to add, "But I've not seen heat or light -" before Trump interrupted her. I was a physician then on the front lines of the pandemic in a New York City intensive care unit, and I felt angry at Birx when I saw that clip. Her tepid response made me think she was more concerned with avoiding the rage of … [Read more...] about Book World: Deborah Birx’s unseen fight to stop Trump’s covid falsehoods
Prioritizing Your Mental Health to Impact Your Bottom Line
Behind the Review host and Yelp’s Small Business Expert, Emily Washcovick, shares a look at this week’s episode of the podcast. Balancing the demands of your business with your own mental health needs is no easy feat. Expectations are high, and giving into “grind culture” sometimes seems like the only option—which can put your personal wellbeing in the back seat. But it's crucial to move away from that narrative. Instead, try to focus on all of the positive impacts you can have on your team, your business, and your bottom. This starts with making sure that you, your brain, and your mental health are taken care of and prioritized. This topic is particularly important to me after my own experience with mental health struggles. In 2018, I had a manic episode that resulted in a hospitalization, and I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. I spent the next three months in intensive treatment and therapy Monday through Friday, learning about my brain and the steps I could take to find … [Read more...] about Prioritizing Your Mental Health to Impact Your Bottom Line
3 Leadership Lessons I Learned From the Movie Gung Ho & Why They Still Apply 36 Years Later
In the 1986 film Gung Ho , a Japanese automaker moves into an abandoned factory in a down-on-its-heels Pennsylvania town. Both the automaker and the town's newly re-employed autoworkers want to make the plant work, but they are at odds concerning principles, methods and leadership styles . Misunderstandings threaten the attainment of a production goal both sides need. At the center of things is Hunt Stevenson, played by Michael Keaton, who is a former plant foreman appointed as employee-management liaison. He is torn between loyalty to his auto-worker friends on the line and the company that has just given him his first leadership position . So, what lessons can we take from this movie 36 years after its release and bring it to our businesses today? Here are three key lessons I took from it and applied to my role at NutraScience Labs: 1. The necessity of strong, honest leadership Hunt Stevenson's underlying motivation for most of the movie was protecting his … [Read more...] about 3 Leadership Lessons I Learned From the Movie Gung Ho & Why They Still Apply 36 Years Later
