(CNN)The family whose child died falling from a Royal Caribbean cruise ship in July has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the cruise line. Michael Winkleman, the family's attorney, said at a news conference the "singular goal" of the lawsuit is to raise awareness about the risk of falling from windows and "prevent this from ever happening to another child again." Chloe Wiegand, 18 months old, was playing on a Royal Caribbean ship docked in Puerto Rico with her grandfather, Salvatore "Sam" Anello, when she fell from an open glass window to her death. The lawsuit says the glass panes on the deck can be slid open by any passenger, and the walls didn't contain warnings that the panes could open. A photo of Chloe Wiegand released in the lawsuit filed against Royal Caribbean by the family shows the toddler on the same deck from which she later fell. Chloe's family argues the cruise line failed to comply with industry safety standards to prevent guests from falling from … [Read more...] about The family whose toddler fell to her death from a Royal Caribbean cruise ship sues the company

Official: Cruise Ship Could House 1,000 Oakland Homeless
OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA - A San Francisco Bay Area city official wants to explore the possibility of using a cruise ship to house up to 1,000 homeless people amid a high cost of living and a shortage of housing. Oakland City Council President Rebecca Kaplan told a council meeting Tuesday that the ship would be brought to the Port of Oakland, but port officials said Wednesday the move would be "untenable." "We respect President Kaplan's desire to address homelessness but Port of Oakland docks are designed to work cargo ships, there isn't the infrastructure to berth a cruise ship," port spokesman Mike Zampa said. The port is among the 10 busiest in the nation and safety and security issues in the federally regulated facilities "would make residential uses untenable," Zampa said. Kaplan didn't immediately return a request for further comment from The Associated Press. Kaplan said she has been contacted by cruise ship companies about providing a ship for emergency housing, and that the … [Read more...] about Official: Cruise Ship Could House 1,000 Oakland Homeless

Regional Measure 3: Voters approve bridge toll hikes to improve regional transit
Regional Measure 3, which would raise tolls on the Bay Area’s latticework of state-owned bridges by $3 to fund $4.5 billion in transportation improvements, was holding onto a lead early Wednesday with about half of the ballots counted. The measure, on the ballot in all nine Bay Area counties, had 54 percent of the vote. To pass, Regional Measure 3 needs only a majority of votes cast in all of the counties combined. Regional Measure 3 was passing in all but two counties: Contra Costa and Solano. The measure’s strongest support was coming from San Francisco, where it had 65 percent of the vote. In Santa Clara County, it captured 61 percent. Measure 3 took an early lead as mail-in ballots were tallied shortly after the polls closed at 8 p.m., with 52 percent of the vote. Its lead slowly increased as vote counts trickled in from around the region. “We’ve got tough traffic challenges that are true obstacles,” said Carl Guardino, CEO of the Silicon Valley … [Read more...] about Regional Measure 3: Voters approve bridge toll hikes to improve regional transit
