Gabe Lacques USA TODAY Published 4:32 PM EDT Oct 2, 2018 They will play because it is their only avenue to continue their seasons. Forgive the Colorado Rockies and Chicago Cubs, however, if they feel Tuesday night’s National League wild-card game is a nuisance beneath the two of them. Both led their respective divisions by one game with two to play. Both were afforded another chance Monday in Game 163 of their seasons to nail down slots in the NL Division Series. Instead, the Cubs lost to the Brewers for the fifth time in seven games this past month and the Rockies lost to the Dodgers for the sixth time in seven games. So their playoffs begin, kind of, as it often feels like you didn’t even participate at all if you fail to escape the wild-card round. A look at their respective chances to do just that: For starters Rockies (Kyle Freeland 17-7, 2.85 ERA) at Cubs (Jon Lester, 18-6, 3.32), 8 p.m. ET, ESPN. The winner will play the Milwaukee Brewers … [Read more...] about Why the Colorado Rockies will beat the Chicago Cubs in the NL wild-card game
Why is bryant playing left field
CHICAGO (AP) — Slugger Kris Bryant was back in the Chicago Cubs' lineup after missing two games because of a bruised left wrist. The 2016 NL MVP was batting sixth and playing left field, with David Bote at third base for Friday's afternoon game against St. Louis. Bryant was hit by a pitch from Pittsburgh's Chris Archer on Tuesday. He has had two stints on the disabled list this season because of left shoulder inflammation. The 26-year-old Bryant is batting .276 with 12 homers and 49 RBIs in 98 games, and manager Joe Maddon sees no reason why he can't be a major contributor in the postseason. "I don't think the hand's (an issue)," Maddon said. "I think the shoulder's been rested a couple days. Yeah, I think he can be effective." The Cubs began the day leading second-place Milwaukee by a game in the NL Central. They are headed to the playoffs for a franchise-record fourth straight year. Maddon wasn't sure if reliever Pedro Strop (strained left hamstring) will pitch this weekend. He … [Read more...] about Cubs’ Bryant back after missing 2 games with bruised wrist
CLEMSON — After being coy all summer about who would be Clemson's starting quarterback, Dabo Swinney announced on Monday what most people expected.Kelly Bryant, the senior who led the Tigers to a 12-2 record last season, will start for Clemson on Saturday when it opens the season against Furman. He won the job over freshman Trevor Lawrence. It was a combination of Bryant's leadership in the locker room, his noticeable improvement in the down-field passing game, his commanding management of Clemson's system and perhaps his all-time high confidence that proved to make the difference. The Tigers have rallied around Bryant during practice as many of them consider him their leader. Now he will be — at least for Week 1."It's always good to hear from your coaches first-hand, but I just carried the same approach as if I was the starter and now, it's about performing Saturday," Bryant said. "Nothing's set in stone. This is just for the first game. So now I've got to go out there and … [Read more...] about Why Kelly Bryant won Clemson’s starting quarterback job for Week 1 and what it means

One year from today, what will be Nicholas Castellanos’ primary defensive position? Let’s start by eliminating some positions. He won’t play left field or center for obvious reasons. He won’t play in the middle infield, even though he was once a shortstop. He won’t catch and probably won’t pitch even though seemingly every other position player in the majors has pitched this season. That leaves his current position — right field, his old position — third base, designated hitter and first base. Assuming his bicep injury heals properly, Miguel Cabrera will return to first … [Read more...] about Where will Detroit Tigers’ Nicholas Castellanos play on defense?
ABOUT TYROD TAYLOR 1. The Browns putting their power running game on display is critical to the team's success. With Tyrod Taylor as the quarterback, the team absolutely must run the ball with authority. Taylor is a capable passer, but it makes no sense to demand the Browns to fill the air with flying footballs. 2. New General Manager John Dorsey seems to have been designing this approach from the moment he took the job last December. He watched an inexperienced and overwhelmed DeShone Kizer continually turn the ball over. He saw an inconsistent running game, partly because Hue Jackson was not committed to making it work. 3. Dorsey brought in Taylor, who threw only four interceptions last season. He signed Carlos Hyde, a tractor of a running back with the San Francisco 49ers. He used the second-round pick acquired in the Brock Osweiler deal to draft Nick Chubb, another powerful running back. 4. In Friday's 19-17 preseason loss to Buffalo, the Browns scored on their first … [Read more...] about Cleveland Browns: Talking Tyrod Taylor, Dez Bryant, big picture — Terry Pluto
