CULTURE & ARTS 07/04/2018 05:46 am ET In Season 2, Episode 12, a death rocks the Waterford household. By Emma Gray No child is safe in Gilead. Well, more accurately, no girl child is safe in Gilead. In Season 2′s penultimate episode of “The Handmaid’s Tale,” Serena (Yvonne Strahovski), June (Elisabeth Moss), Nick (Max Minghella) and Rita (Amanda Brugel) learn this with certainty. Eden (Sydney Sweeney), who has spent weeks on the edges of the show and of Gilead’s notice, makes the brash choice to run off with her Guardian lover. They are caught and dragged back, only to be punished with death. Nick pleads with her to save herself by lying, but instead Eden is true to herself and her faith to a fault. She refuses to renounce her “sin” ― being a teen girl in an oppressive society who wants both love and a baby ― and is killed because of it. This death, which the entire Waterford household is forced to witness, shakes … [Read more...] about ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Lays Bare The Utter Hell Of Raising A Daughter In Gilead

DRIVING THE CONVERSATION -- "Politicking off impeachment chatter," by Jake Sherman and John Bresnahan: "Something very strange is happening on Capitol Hill. Democrats can’t talk enough about impeaching a president of their own party. And Republicans keep saying that there isn’t a chance they’ll give it a try. With just three days left until Congress recesses for the month of August, Democrats have successfully kept alive the idea that Speaker John Boehner is mulling impeaching President Obama — an option the Ohio Republican insists he isn’t pursuing. The tactic has brought big dollars into Democrats’ coffers, and it has kept Republican aides and lawmakers busy as they keep swatting down the idea whenever it sprouts up. ... A small group of hardline GOP lawmakers have discussed [impeachment], even raising the taboo topic during a closed-door GOP meeting last week." http://politi.co/X8WOoG --A TOP GOP LEADERSHIP AIDE emails after reading the … [Read more...] about 98 DAYS TO MIDTERMS – IMPEACHMENT TALK = BIG $$$ FOR DEMS – BILL CLINTON, MIKE BLOOMBERG to star at Africa summit — LAURA INGRAHAM talks of running – B’DAYS: Peter Alexander, Herbie Ziskend

For 25 years, Jan Creamer and Tim Phillips have made it their mission to stop animal abuse in circuses. They caused a furor in their native England when they released video they'd secretly recorded of one of Britain's most prestigious trainers abusing circus animals. Prosecutors used their footage to convict the trainer of animal cruelty. Then, this relentless couple went global, sending teams to infiltrate circuses around the world to document the mistreatment of animals. Their work helped lead to local laws banning most wild animals from circuses in more than 15 U.S. states; and to national bans in more than 20 countries. As we first reported in March, their latest successes have been across South America where they spent years recording animal cruelty on hidden cameras. We caught up with Jan and Tim in Peru, along with two dozen lucky lions they'd recently rescued from traveling circuses. *A warning: some of the pictures, later in this report, are disturbing. These caged … [Read more...] about Disturbing footage of circus animal abuse leads to widespread reform
(CBS News) Billy Graham preached the Gospel of faith and family to millions around the globe. These days, he has passed the torch to his son Franklin Graham, who recently sat down with our CBS News colleague Byron Pitts of "60 Minutes": In his prime, when Billy Graham preached, it was as if Heaven could hear him. It was old-time fire and brimstone, in the cool New Age of television . . . and the world embraced him. But the world has changed. Dr. Graham is 93 and made his last public appearance two years ago. His legacy is set - the brand name and the business now belong to his son, Franklin. And by his own admission, William Franklin Graham III is no Billy Graham. "I think some people in the secular world may see me as some kind of right-wing zealot," Graham told Pitts. "Maybe many in the church would see me as maybe somebody who's trying to hang onto the faith, and who is faithful to the Gospel of Jesus Christ." "Which are you?" Pitts asked. "I hope I'm one that's faithful to the … [Read more...] about Franklin Graham: The hell-raising evangelist’s son
