Few position groups have been more polarizing than the safety class in the build up to the 2019 NFL Draft. The class features a handful of dynamic prospects with pundits mixing and matching their favorites in positional rankings. Opinions on each individual safety vary, depending on who you ask.According to an AFC defensive backs coach, who spoke to NJ Advance Media on the condition of anonymity, opinions are divided because of the group’s lack of overall scheme versatility.“I think a lot of these guys are going to be scheme fits,” the coach said. “I’m not so sure you can say ‘this guy can fit in any scheme.' Two of them appear headed for the Detroit roster, as Mike Green is sidelined indefinitely by a viral infection, creating an opening on top of the one made when Xavier Ouellet was bought out over the summer. The top candidates for the spots are Dennis Cholowski, Libor Sulak, Filip Hronek and Joe Hicketts. Vili Saarijarvi is in the second tier — he’s looked really good in camp, significantly better than last season. The plan is to play each candidate in at least five preseason games.
