Establish independent special prosecutors Re: “Report: No legal basis for stop,” Feb. 23 news story The conclusions reached by the investigation into Elijah McClain’s death are yet another in a long line of examples of why all lethal or disabling outcomes involving our police must be routinely independently investigated. All prosecutors must depend on and work closely together with law enforcement. Every day our police bring cases, discuss evidence and possible charges with their local prosecutors. These prosecutors depend on police testimony to win their cases. It’s a contentious, effective, but highly mutually dependent relationship. When local prosecutors investigate local police, to the public, it’s the fox watching the hen house. This is not fair to our police or to our injured or slain citizens and their communities. Gov. Jared Polis and our legislators must establish an independent special prosecutor empowered statewide to investigate uniformly and, when indicated, … [Read more...] about Letters: Establish independent special prosecutors (2/25/21)

De Blasio Calls for Probe Into Sexual Harassment Allegations Against Cuomo
Photo: Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images A day after a former aide accused Governor Andrew Cuomo of sexual harassment, several New York lawmakers said her allegations must be taken seriously and called for an investigation. During a press availability on Thursday, New York City mayor Bill de Blasio — who’s often had an antagonistic relationship with the governor — called the accusations against Cuomo “disturbing.” “When a woman comes forward with this kind of very specific allegation, they have to be taken seriously,” de Blasio said. “We need a full and independent investigation.” On Wednesday, Lindsey Boylan, who previously worked in the Cuomo administration, made detailed accusations of sexual harassment against the governor in a Medium post, saying he repeatedly made inappropriate comments and advances and once gave her an unwanted kiss on the lips as she was exiting a meeting. In a recent speech, delivered virtually before the Munich Security Conference, President Biden adamantly declared , “We have to push back against the Chinese government’s abuses and coercion that undercut the foundations of the international economic system.” “Everyone must play by the same rules,” he added. Earlier in February, the White House issued a similarly strong statement following the first phone call between Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping. According to the White House , Biden raised “fundamental concerns” about various problems in China, including “coercive and unfair economic practices, crackdown in Hong Kong, human rights abuses in Xinjiang, and increasingly assertive actions in the region, including toward Taiwan.” ADVERTISEMENT Although Biden’s statements are undoubtedly important and should be welcomed by Americans of every political persuasion, it is hard to imagine Beijing is shaking in its boots over Biden’s tough talk. For starters, Biden … [Read more...] about Despite tough talk, Biden would make Beijing more powerful than ever
Ethiopia’s Nobel-Winning Leader Issues Warning Over Dam
ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA - Ethiopia's Nobel Peace Prize-winning prime minister warned Tuesday that if there's a need to go to war over a dam project disputed with Egypt his country could ready millions of people, but he said only negotiation can resolve a current deadlock. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed made the remarks during a parliament question-and-answer session, his most prominent public appearance since winning the Nobel on Oct. 11. He also defended his win after some have debated whether he deserved it: “Some individuals are finding it hard to accept about the Nobel Peace Prize. It's already given to Abiy, and it won't be taken away from him. That's it! This is a dead issue! Now our focus should be on how to motivate other youths to win the prize. People who continue to dwell on this are wasting their time.” The 43-year-old, who was awarded the prize for sweeping political reforms and for making peace with longtime rival Eritrea after taking office last year, faced lawmakers' … [Read more...] about Ethiopia’s Nobel-Winning Leader Issues Warning Over Dam
