Are we fleeing from something – or someone – when we seek refuge? Should we consider national forests and other protected public lands the refuges wildlife needs from humans? These and other questions were asked and challenged throughout the weekend in Joseph at Winter Fishtrap, a three-day gathering that focuses panel discussions, conversations, readings and other events around a single word, theme or concept. The event is hosted by Fishtrap, the literary arts organization based in Enterprise. Michael Kunzelman Associated Press Published 9:32 AM EST Dec 19, 2018 An internet troll who harassed a black college student with racist messages on social media has agreed to a court settlement requiring him to get "anti-hate training," apologize in writing and on video and publicly renounce white supremacy. Tuesday's settlement agreement would resolve Taylor Dumpson's claims against one of the defendants she sued in April over an online harassment campaign orchestrated by a neo-Nazi website publisher. Dumpson is a graduate of Wi-Hi. Her lawsuit says The Daily Stormer publisher Andrew Anglin directed his site's readers to cyberbully her after she became the first black woman to serve as American University's student government president. Dumpson sued Anglin and two people who harassed her online. A jury wants James Fields, convicted of killing paralegal Heather Heyer during a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, to serve life in prison on the murder charge, it decided Tuesday.People who attended the white nationalist rally with Fields testified earlier in the trial that Fields seemed exactly like everyone else at the "Unite the Right" event. Virginia judges usually impose the sentence recommended by juries.The jury also recommended a sentence of 70 years each on five counts of aggravated malicious wounding, 20 years each on three counts of malicious wounding and 9 years for hit and run, as well as $480,000 in total fines.On Friday, the same jury found Fields guilty of first-degree murder on its first day of deliberations following a trial of almost two weeks.Fields' lawyers argued that he acted in self-defense and out of fear when he rammed his auto into a crowd.Jurors concluded this was a premeditated killing that also injured dozens of others.
