The Cost Of $4.99 Rotisserie Chickens: Costco Gets Sued For Animal Mistreatment
(CNN) — In 2019, Costco opened a $450 million poultry processing plant in Nebraska to produce millions of its staple $4.99 Kirkland Signature rotisserie chickens. It was a rare step for a retail company to take but a sign of just how valuable rotisserie chickens are to Costco’s business. The company has sold them at $4.99 for more than a decade, lower than most rivals, and uses them as loss leaders to draw customers into stores. Costco sold 106 million of the cooked birds last year. Costco violates animal welfare laws to sell $4.99 chicken, suit says
To better control the price and size of its chickens, Costco decided to wean itself off major poultry producers and build its own supply network in the Midwest, where the company created an entire infrastructure from scratch. It was a half-billion-dollar gamble that some worried would hurt the warehouse club's reputation, even as it kept the company supplied with millions of chickens that Costco roasts in-house and sells at a loss to attract new members and more foot traffic. Last year, not even 24 months into its poultry experiment, Costco was the target of an undercover investigation by Mercy for Animals, which showed a Nebraska barn crowded with birds, some with open sores, sitting in their own feces because they were too top-heavy to walk. The investigation led to a Nicholas Kristof opinion piece in The New York Times. It also led to news stories in Nebraska, where Costco built a $450 million poultry complex in Fremont, as well as a petition to urge the company to adopt better … [Read more...] about Costco violates animal welfare laws to sell $4.99 chicken, suit says
Mandatory Common Core tests in New York just happen to be full of corporate brand names
Across the state of New York, this year’s Common Core English tests have reportedly featured a slew of brand-name products including iPod, Barbie, Mug Root Beer and Life Savers. For Nike, the tests even conveniently included the shoe company’s ubiquitous slogan: “Just Do It.” The brands – and apparently even some of their familiar trademark symbols – appeared in tests questions for students ranging from third to eighth grades, reports The Post-Standard of Syracuse . Over one million students were required to take the tests. Parents, teachers and school administrators have speculated that the kid-friendly brand names are a new form of product placement. Education materials behemoth Pearson, which has a $32 million five-year contract to develop New York’s Common Core-related tests, has barred teachers and school officials from disclosing the contents of the tests. Students and parents are not so barred, though, and many have complained. “‘Why are they trying to sell me … [Read more...] about Mandatory Common Core tests in New York just happen to be full of corporate brand names
These US Companies Will Cover Travel Costs For Employees Who Need An Abortion
(CNN) — After the Supreme Court ruled on Friday to overturn Roe v. Wade, corporate giants from a range of industries pledged to provide support and financial assistance for employees — and, in some cases, their dependents — seeking abortions in states that outlaw the procedure. The court’s decision to roll back the nearly 50-year-old landmark ruling, which protected the federal, constitutional right to an abortion, is expected to transform the landscape of reproductive health in America, leaving abortion policy up to individual states and paving the way for numerous states to pass new abortion restrictions. As of Friday afternoon, state officials in at least seven states said that new abortion bans can now be enforced. ‘Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe’ Sees Mike Judge’s Horny MTV Duo Make Their Triumphant Return
The world has only grown stupider over the past three decades, making the return of animation’s crown princes of idiocy, Beavis and Butt-Head, long overdue. Arriving June 23 on Paramount+ (along with their entire MTV TV series catalog), Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe is an admirable follow-up to 1996’s Beavis and Butt-Head Do America , proving that amusing inanity never goes out of style. In fact, such absurdity transcends eras, as does the senseless duo in their latest adventure, which follows them through a time-space portal that transports them from the cozy confines of 1998 to the perplexing landscape of 2022. Situating Beavis and Butt-Head in a modern context would seem like a premise ripe for pointed satire, and there are definitely a few digs at contemporary culture sprinkled throughout Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe . Yet for the most part, the film’s scenario is merely an excuse for the same brand of braindead chuckling and sexual puns that have always … [Read more...] about ‘Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe’ Sees Mike Judge’s Horny MTV Duo Make Their Triumphant Return

Great white shark numbers are up significantly in Monterey Bay
MONTEREY, Calif. — There is a dramatic increase in the number of great white sharks swimming in Monterey Bay, including an area off Santa Cruz County where a surfer was killed last year, according to a study published Tuesday. The study found young great whites that are between 5 and 9 feet long and traditionally concentrated in warm waters off northern Mexico and Southern California have moved north since 2014 as water temperatures have warmed. Where once there were no juvenile white sharks spotted in the ocean between Aptos and Capitola, now there are dozens seen every year, according to research from scientists at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Duke University and Cal State Long Beach. The sharks swim there in groups between April and October, sometimes within a few yards of the shoreline; some have been photographed swimming near people. “When the water is warm and they come in the bay, you can see them swim near people all day long.
