The Buffalo Sabres' historic collapse will mercifully end Saturday night in Detroit. Their playoff drought is now the longest in the NHL, a startling statistic considering they sat atop the standings after winning their 10th consecutive game Nov. 27. Instead of a tuneup for meaningful hockey, the Sabres will either win back-to-back games for the first time since Dec. 13, or they will improve their odds for the first overall draft pick. Though players will depart for the offseason after speaking to reporters at locker cleanout, General Manager Jason Botterill's work is only beginning. First, he will travel to Toronto for the NHL Draft Lottery, which will be held Tuesday night at the CBC building. The results will be broadcast live on NBC Sports Network at 8 p.m. Once the order for June's draft is determined, Botterill's staff can narrow its focus on which prospects will be available. A loss to the Red Wings would give the Sabres (32-39-10) the fourth-best odds of landing the number one … [Read more...] about Sabres could have sights set on center after NHL Draft Lottery
Which lottery has the best odds of winning
CLEVELAND, Ohio — Tanking is no longer as attractive. The NBA approved a change to its draft lottery system nearly two years ago, and it goes into effect now. The worst team in the league no longer has the best odds of winning the No. 1 pick May 14 in Chicago. Now, the three worst teams will have an equal shot and the lottery will be for the top four picks. Here is how it works:• The teams with the three worst records will each have a 14 percent chance of winning the No. 1 overall pick. • The fourth-worst team will not be too far behind with a 12.5 percent chance. The fifth-worst record will have a 10.5 percent chance, and so on.• Again, it is important to note the lottery will now be for the first four picks. Traditionally, the drawing decided the top three picks.• The rest of the draft order will be determined by record, starting with the worst teams that didn't receive one of those top picks. That part does not change.Under these rules, the team with the … [Read more...] about How does the NBA Draft Lottery work in 2019?
The NHL playoff race entered the final week of the season on Monday. Not in Buffalo, of course, where the Sabres are out of the hunt for the seventh straight year and will miss the postseason for the eighth season in a row. The Sabres are at the opposite end of the standings, where their collapse to the finish line could have direct correlation to their success in the NHL Draft Lottery. There are three games left in the regular season, starting with Tuesday's visit by Nashville to KeyBank Center, and the Sabres have slipped all the way to 28th out of 31 teams in the NHL's overall standing. They entered Monday with 72 points, four ahead of New Jersey prior to the Devils' game against the New York Rangers. Los Angeles (67 points) could also pass the Sabres while only last-place Ottawa (62) can't catch Buffalo. The Sabres are 1-12-2 in their last 15 games and have not won in regulation in 18 games, since their Feb. 23 upset of defending Stanley Cup champion Washington. Sabres booed off … [Read more...] about Lottery odds about all Sabres have left to play for
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Cavaliers know you want them to tank. They don’t care. They’ve experienced enough losing, especially after the losses piled up quickly during an injury-riddled first half of the season, which shattered their grand plan to fight for a playoff spot. Now, with the season coming to a close and only days away from having a fully-stacked deck for the first time all year, this rejuvenated squad has hefty goals.“With everybody coming back and guys really coming into their own -- myself, Cedi (Osman), Collin (Sexton) has been playing great -- I would like to see us, if you start the season today, I would like to see us in the playoffs,” Larry Nance Jr. told cleveland.com Thursday night.Playoffs? Nance knows that’s not possible. He can do math. Cleveland is 14.5 games back of the eighth-seeded Pistons. The win against Phoenix moved the Cavs to 13-46 on the season. There’s no way the left-for-dead Cavs can really make a miraculous rise in … [Read more...] about Larry Nance Jr. and Cleveland Cavaliers have big goals for second half of season: ‘Playoff’ basketball
Knicks coach David Fizdale gave European journalists a tanking course during the Knicks’ trip to London. There’s no such thing in British soccer’s renowned Premier League, where a club with the worst record faces threats of being “relegated’’ to a lower division. NBA commissioner Adam Silver won his lottery reform for 2019, but it has hardly stopped the league’s bottom dwellers from racking up losses at a frenetic pace. The NBA’s bottom four — the Cavaliers, Knicks, Suns and Bulls — are immersed in a fascinating tanking tortoise race to April’s finish line. Each is in position to be part of the “Terrible Trio” that will split the best odds of winning the lottery and a chance at Duke’s Zion Williamson. Teams with the three worst records will each share a 14 percent chance of winning the lottery. They will each have a 52 percent chance of a top-four pick. Buckle up because the Bulls-Cavaliers-Suns-Knicks … [Read more...] about Knicks’ youth commitment puts them in thick of race to bottom
