Jim Beckerman Staff Writer, @jimbeckerman1 Published 6:35 p.m. UTC Jun 6, 2018 This is the year of Black Panther. Which means it's also the year of Kendrick Lamar, who did the soundtrack. Now the Hot 97 Summer Jam, the festival with a long and occasionally troubled history, returns to the Meadowlands on Sunday with Lamar— hip-hop's man of the hour— as its headliner. "He's just blown up to levels that are incredibly insane," says TT Torrez, music director for WQHT (97.1 FM). Better known as Hot 97, it is probably the country's best known urban contemporary station, and it has sponsored the annual hip-hop festival at the Meadowlands since 1994. A blur of impromptu gesticulation, she flawlessly lip-synched her rhymes as they played, prompting protective label reps to stop audience members from recording her direct to YouTube. One of the most eagerly anticipated major-label debuts in years, Invasion of Privacy was preceded by too many quality independent releases for anyone to believe it would be bad. Even before the pop chart–topping success of last year’s “Bodak … [Read more...] about Cardi B Is the Red Hot Boss Bitch of the Pop Moment
On a recent morning, Merry Green, the founder of the Black Women’s Expo, was a little tired and a little wired, but she had her coffee in hand and was ready to go as she organized the final preparations for the 2018 Black Women’s Expo. “I was up at 4:30 this morning doing some work, I placed all the orders in for McCormick Place. The booths, carpeting, tables and chairs… I knew I needed to get that done before I met with the new Toyota agency that came in to view McCormick Place.” Although the president of MGPG Events for more than 24 years with many top shows and events under her belt, Green admits that she still looks for unique ways to make each show better—for the attendees as well as the sponsors. This year, Green has formed a partnership with Real Times Media, the parent company of the Chicago Defender. Green stated that there had been conversations earlier about connecting. “We (Hiram Jackson, CEO of Real Times Media, and I] had … [Read more...] about The Black Women’s Expo Partners With Real Times Media to Celebrate Women
