Glee: Brittany (Heather Morris) steps up to the music of Britney Spears

FOX It’s Britney Brittany, bitch. Well, that was awesome, right? Look, I’m not a Britney fan (shocking, but true), and I was a little eye-rolly about the whole Britney episode idea. Yes, I loved the Madonna episode when it aired, but the all-Material Girl theme was a little intrusive. It seemed more like a very special episode and less like a chapter in the evolving story. Plus, I wasn’t entirely convinced of Brit-Brit’s cultural impact, especially when measured against the chiseled arms of the queen of pop music. Tonight’s episode, however, was brilliant. Using the Britney homages as nitrous-induced fantasies was an inspired choice. Even though we explored several hits from Ms. Spears, it just felt a lot less forced than previous eps dedicated to a single star. And, fine, you win this round Glee, I’ll admit Britney has made a huge impact in the cultural landscape, just not really for her music necessarily. And can we just talk for one hot minute about how unbelievable Brittany (Heather Morris) was? That girl is amazing. Oh, and Britney-proper showed up and managed not to look like this. Good job! If you’re anything like me, you’ll watch this episode at least three times before next week. Let’s debate the best moments! In a nutshell: In what should be a surprise to no one, Will still has a sad, singing little flutter in his heart for Emma, but she’s moved on to Uncle Jesse the dentist. She brings her new beau in to speak with the glee club about oral hygiene and soon discovers Brittany has been gargling with soda after ever meal. When she comes in for her extensive dental work, she finds herself in a dream while under anesthesia that places her in several of Britney Spears iconic looks. The vision awakens the star performer in her and soon the rest of the New Directions kids are lining up to get the gas and find their inner diva. This includes Artie who still wants to make a go at joining the football Continue Reading

I Hated Britney Spears Until I Saw Myself In Her

The first, last, and only time I kissed a girl, she was dressed as Britney Spears. If you had asked me how I felt about Britney during the fall of 1999, the year I turned 14, I probably would have told you that I hated her. I didn’t know it at the time, but I hated Britney for the same reason that many teenagers hate many things: because, on some deep, intuitive, lizard-brain level, hatred is a useful way to define and clarify your position in the world. In that way, hatred is as valuable as love — or at least it can feel that way, especially during the long, slow, sweaty pressure cooker of adolescence, when the self seems most in danger of explosion or evaporation. Both of these outcomes seemed possible (probable, even) on the night I kissed a girl. It happened at a Halloween party thrown by my twin sister’s friend Jamie, down in the thick-carpeted basement of her parents’ McMansion. I don’t remember wearing a costume. Certainly I was sporting my late-’90s bowl cut, and my palms were sweating, clamped around whatever red plastic cup of Coke or Sprite I had been handed but was now too scared and too excited to drink. It was my first high school party (although, blessedly, not one cool enough to involve alcohol).I do, however, remember Jamie’s outfit: She was dressed like Britney in the “…Baby One More Time” video. Jamie and my sister Katie both went to an all-girls Catholic school where white blouses and knee-length plaid kilts were the standard uniform, so the costume was an obvious choice. All Jamie had to do was pull her thick, chestnut brown hair back into pigtails and sweep her eyelids with some shadow. The costume was also — and I knew this with the delicate sensors that my own, all-boys Catholic high school was calibrating to an often painful acuity — a tiny bit passé. “…Baby One More Time” had first topped the Billboard Hot 100 back in February, and its famous video Continue Reading

Seven things to know about Britney Spears’ mysterious new love interest Sam Asghari

Britney Spears has been spotted once again cozying up to her rumored flame Sam Asghari — and this time they were ringing in the new year together. Spears dropped a hint that her and the Persian playboy are an official item after sharing an adorable photo over the weekend. The two reportedly first hit it off after spending time together on the set. Britney Spears may lip-sync her way through two-year Las Vegas gig: Sources

It sounds “Criminal.” Britney Spears may be taking fans for a ride when she kicks off her residency in Las Vegas at the end of the year. The pop star announced on ABC’s “Good Morning America” last week that she’ll do a two-year stint at Sin City’s Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino, starting Dec. 27. Spears is proud of her new figure, tweeting this bikini picture on September 8, 2013. But sources tell us it’s possible that Spears, 31, may be phoning in the “Britney: Piece of Me” shows, in which she plans on performing 21 of her greatest hits over about 90 minutes. PHOTOS: BRITNEY SPEARS WEARS A SKIN-TIGHT DRESS TO CHURCH “Britney does not sing. She is being paid a lot of money to lip-sync,” says the source. “Her fans are none the wiser, but it is disingenuous of her to take their cash and not deliver a proper performance.” This isn’t the first time the “Toxic” singer has been accused of lip-syncing. Reports surfaced this year that the star is not even singing in the recording studio. In 2009, fans stormed out of her “Circus” tour in Australia and demanded their money back because of disappointment over her lip-syncing. It took her a while, but Spears has a hot new single, 'Work B---h.' “I’m going to definitely do the greatest hits, but I’m going to have to put some of my new material in it to just keep it fresh,” Spears said on what appeared to be a well-rehearsed interview on “GMA” last Tuesday about the upcoming Las Vegas shows. She has confirmed 16 dates, but will perform 50 shows in 2014 and 2015. Industry insiders estimate Spears will take home a cool $15 million per year for the work. Tickets are priced between $59 and $179. “She hasn’t sung live for a couple of years,” says our source. “If the crowd thinks they are being cheated then there is likely to Continue Reading

Justin Bieber’s mother has teen on same scary course as Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus and LiLo

When I was 16 years old, my parents took me to Washington. We visited the National Gallery, had a memorable dinner at a French restaurant where Robert De Niro was also eating and took pictures on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. At the time, I thought it was a pretty sweet vacation. In fact, I still do. The notion that I could have instead been canoodling with my hypothetical (read: nonexistent) older boyfriend on a yacht in St. Lucia - my parents nowhere to be seen as he fondled my posterior - is unfathomable for so many reasons that I don't have the time or energy to recount them all. But for Justin Bieber, apparently, the rules are a bit different. Last month, photos surfaced of the 16-year-old crooner with the famous shaggy hair and his 18-year-old celebrity girlfriend Selena Gomez enjoying a romantic vacation in the Caribbean. These raised a near-infinite number of questions, not the least of these being: "What the hell were you thinking, Mom?" Now, it's possible that Justin's mother, Pattie Mallette, who is largely credited with launching her son to stardom at 12 by uploading clips to YouTube of him singing, was in a nearby cabin, making sure that her son and Gomez "left room for the Holy Ghost," as they used to say. Maybe she simply, genuinely believes his relationship with Gomez is innocent puppy love. Or maybe her own troubled childhood has resulted in a hands-off approach to Justin's. But if we've learned anything over the past decade, cringing as Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan and now, it seems, Miley Cyrus, spiraled into destructive melodramas of reckless and criminal behavior, it's that stardom is the worst influence on a young person's mental and physical well-being. And despite Bieber's fresh-faced and wholesome image, the impressive trajectory on which he now finds himself is, historically, a recipe for disaster. And I'm losing hope that he will be able to survive his own early fame, especially since it appears that his mother doesn't know Continue Reading

Reshaping the Britney Spears coverage

This week the mags dissect Britney's "New Bikini Body!" (Star); Katie & Tom's marriage, "What Went Wrong" (In Touch); Angelina's pregnancy scare, "Rushed to the Doctor!" (Life & Style), and Shiloh's "Baby Album!" (Us Weekly). OK! features a direct quote from Katie - "Don't Mess with My Family!" - and claims to have the straight story from Mrs. McCrazy herself. We'll see. Here's what the mags are talking about this week ... I don't know, looks like Britney's same old bikini body to me. Suri had a big second-birthday party at a rented Hollywood Hills mansion that's rumored to be used as a Scientology retreat. Darn. That's SO where I was going to have my kid's second-birthday party. OK!'s cover story tells us that Katie is fed up with all the rumors about her marriage breaking up and that her home life is perfectly happy. One friend says, "Her solution [to stopping the rumors] is to keep going about her life, business as usual. She'll keep a smile on her face when she's out in public with Tom and keep the hurt hidden at home." Yes, that does indeed sound like the way to maintain a happy home life. Lynne Spears opens up to Life & Style, saying: "I'm a bit disappointed that my youngest daughter got pregnant at such an early age." "A bit disappointed"? Wow, I wonder what it would take to really tick her off. Impromptu wedding in Vegas? Drug use? Sketchy boyfriends? Excluding her from her grandsons' lives? I wonder. Jessica Simpson loves Tony Romo. Tony Romo seems to love Jessica back. BUT Tony's family loves Tony's ex-girlfriend Carrie Underwood, and Carrie Underwood is newly single and rumored to be interested in reuniting with Tony. Jessica Simpson better watch her man's back. Jake Gyllenhaal wants to open a restaurant. One source says, "Cooking is his big hobby and his passion. It's nothing for him to whip up miso-marinated cod with braised microgreens." Note to self: don't go to Jake Gyllenhaal's restaurant. Marky Mark and his Continue Reading

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie drama; Britney Spears disaster

Britney's trashtastic performance at the VMAs was either so anticlimactic or just so over-discussed already that it was relegated to Sidebar City on this week's magazine covers. Instead, we have Angelina on four out of five ... with four completely different stories. And not ONE of them is called "Scary Skinny!" Us Weekly stays out of the Brangie drama with an exclusive on none other than our old friends Ryan and Trista. (You remember them: She was the Bachelorette, he's the fireman, they got married and sold their souls for TV rights? It's all coming back to you now, right?) Here's what the mags are talking about this week... In Touch claims that "Angelina Trashes Brad " in yet another "Exclusive!" (Can they just call anything an "exclusive" these days?) Basically, their source "overheard" a conversation between Angie and "a friend" where she called Brad "a nag," "not easy," and "financially stupid." She did recently tell the "Today" show that she and Brad don't like to be sentimental, but this does seem to be taking things a bit far. Life & Style's cover says, "Angie Tells Brad: Go Back to Jen!" Aw, well, at least that's sentimental. I LOVE the "body language experts" these guys use to analyze the pictures of Brad and Angelina. "Well, she's not smiling in this shot. Clearly, they just decided to split," or "Brad looks angry here. Angelina must have just told him that he and Jen deserve each other." OK, moving away from Brangelina momentarily ... let's talk Britney. In Touch asks "What went wrong?" I ask, "What didn't?" No, of course Britney isn't fat. But her stylist must be on Team Federline/Mom Lynne/Everyone Else Against Britney because a sparkly black bikini was simply not the way to go. What else? The dancing was boring and yet, somehow still poorly performed. Her eyes were vacant and her lip-synching made even Ashlee Simpson cringe. And what happened to all those rumors that she was working with (mind) Freak Criss Angel on Continue Reading

Britney Spears’ TV lip-sync a flop, but new single a big hit

Britney Spears' live VMAs performance was an embarrassing flop, but her new single "Gimme More" could still wind up on top. A thumping dance track full of suggestive come-ons delivered by Spears in a breathy voice, the single landed on the Hot 100 Billboard chart in 85th place. Industry experts expect it to climb fast when the digital version comes out Oct. 2. "I guarantee you, when the song comes out on iTunes, it will probably make it into the top 20," said Billboard's Silvio Pietroluongo. "It's also getting more and more radio play. "All of her other songs have debuted in the lower half of the chart. Without a digital single, you can't debut much higher than she did." The song's momentum does not appear to have been stalled by Spears' putrid performance at Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards, where she lumbered across the stage in an ill-fitting black bikini and lazily lip-synced "Gimme More." Acerbic Simon Cowell of "American Idol" told a British newspaper Spears was so bad that if she had been auditioning for one of his shows he "wouldn't have put her through to the next round." "I'd have taken one look at her in rehearsals, and I wouldn't have allowed her onstage," Cowell told The Sun, adding that "she could have killed her career." In an interview with the "Extra" television show, Cowell conceded that by failing so spectacularly Spears got "more attention in the last 48 hours than any artist on the planet. ... She stole the show, whether you liked it or not." Spears, who became a powerhouse pop princess on the strength of hits like "Baby One More Time" and "Oops! ... I Did It Again," has not discussed her widely panned VMAs performance. More than 7 million people watched Spears stumble about onstage during Sunday's two-hour broadcast, held in Las Vegas for the first time in the show's 24-year history. There have been reports that Spears showed up for rehearsals four hours late, holding a frozen margarita. She also apparently refused to Continue Reading
