· January 18, 2021 ·

In November, Takieddine also took back his claim that he delivered suitcases carrying a total of five-million-euros ($6 million) from Libyan dictator Moamer Kadhafi to Sarkozy’s chief of staff in 2006 and 2007, to help his successful presidential campaign. … [Read more...] about Claim That Kickbacks from Arms Deals Funded French Presidential Election Campaign Goes to Court

· January 17, 2021 ·

Former Presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton are expected to attend the inauguration in person. The only other living president, 96-year-old Jimmy Carter, who has spent the pandemic largely at home in Plains, Ga., will not attend but has extended "best wishes" to Biden, according to a spokeswoman at The Carter Center in Atlanta. … [Read more...] about Who’s attending Biden’s inauguration?

Wow, Joe Scarborough Doesn’t Understand Economics at All

· February 11, 2013 ·

It’s not clear what Obama-Eisenhower spending comparison Scarborough has in mind here. I have seen two. One is that Obama has overseen a lower growth in overall spending, with his first years as a starting point, than any president since Eisenhower. That is true, though it uses the large spike in automatic spending that greeted Obama as a baseline. A second way the claim is used is that Obama has agreed to cut domestic discretionary spending to the lowest level since Dwight Eisenhower was president. This is also true. … [Read more...] about Wow, Joe Scarborough Doesn’t Understand Economics at All

Trump Wanted to Erase Obama’s Legacy. He Failed.

· January 18, 2021 ·

Trump did try to roll back Obama’s greenhouse-gas regulations. This is part of the now-ordinary push-and-pull of regulations that occurs whenever party control of the White House changes hands. On the whole, though, Obama’s push has gone a lot farther than Trump’s pull. That is not only because Trump’s deregulation was carried out so ham-handedly that courts have overturned his policies at a historic rate. It is also because businesses don’t make long-term investment decisions based on ephemeral regulatory conditions. Firms aren’t going to build a new plant to make gas-guzzlers or energy-hogging appliances if they believe those things will be outlawed in a few years. … [Read more...] about Trump Wanted to Erase Obama’s Legacy. Five ways Trump changed California — including one that helped Democrats

· January 18, 2021 ·

Most became involved to roust Trump from office — nearly 2 out of 3 voters rejected him in favor of Democrat Joe Biden. But he got Republicans engaged as well. His 2020 total of 6 million votes was the most ever for a Republican presidential candidate in California, more than even GOP icon Ronald Reagan, who served two terms as governor before winning the White House. … [Read more...] about Five ways Trump changed California — including one that helped Democrats
