For severely obese people with type 2 diabetes, weight-loss surgery reduces the risk of having a heart attack or stroke by almost 40 percent over the course of five years when compared to standard diabetes treatment, according to a study published recently in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). The study also found that people who had the surgery were 67 percent less likely to die from any cause during the five years after their surgery. Because it was observational, the study can’t prove that the surgery was the direct cause of those better health outcomes. Health Weighing yourself oneself every day can help with hitting weight loss targets, according to authors from the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing and University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine. To arrive at their conclusion, the researchers analyzed data on 1,042 adults with an average age of 47 years old. Of the total participants, 78 percent were male and 90 percent were white. For a year, the volunteers weighed themselves as normal using Wi-Fi or Bluetooth enabled scales. The team did not offer the participants advice or directions. By the end of the study, approximately one-third of the participants sustained a habit of daily weighing. For their preliminary study, researchers asked three patients with type 2 diabetes to follow intermittent fasting programs and found they were able to safely stop using insulin to control their blood sugar levels.
