For severely obese people with type 2 diabetes, weight-loss surgery reduces the risk of having a heart attack or stroke by almost 40 percent over the course of five years when compared to standard diabetes treatment, according to a study published recently in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). The study also found that people who had the surgery were 67 percent less likely to die from any cause during the five years after their surgery. Still, the findings suggest, say the study’s authors, that weight-loss surgery should be part of the discussion that severely obese patients with diabetes have with their doctors about treatment options for their diabetes. “I was not surprised by the improvements in the heart attack and stroke, but I was pretty astonished at the magnitude of the drop in the mortality rate,” said Dr. … [Read more...] about Weight-loss surgery linked to lower risk of heart attacks and strokes in patients with type 2 diabetes

Health Fasting can reverse type 2 diabetes, a team of scientists behind a small study have claimed. For their preliminary study, researchers asked three patients with type 2 diabetes to follow intermittent fasting programs and found they were able to safely stop using insulin to control their blood sugar levels. Diabetes is a major health issue in the U.S. closely linked to the obesity epidemic. Most people have type 2 diabetes, where the body develops insulin resistance causing blood glucose levels to shift out of the normal range. Intermittent fasting could help reverse type 2 diabetes, according to researchers. Google the phrase “reverse diabetes,” and you get millions of results — along with endless books, articles, and products that all promise something that may sound too good to be true. But there is one seeming bit of health hype that is indeed true — for some people, with some limits. Reversing type 2 diabetes — or at least putting it into remission for years — is possible, according to George King, research director and chief scientific officer at the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston. Note, however, that reversal does not mean cure. The underlying condition is still there, and symptoms will come roaring back if the careful steps taken to manage them aren’t continued. And eventually, even very careful patients may again need to resume diabetes medications. But any time spent in remission, doctors say, can have long-term health benefits. Strict diet and exercise are the remission remedies at the heart of King’s book, Reverse Your … [Read more...] about She lost 100 pounds and reversed her type 2 diabetes. It’s difficult, but possible
