Han Seung-Gyu shattered Malaysia's dreams with a late goal for South Korea to send Ong Kim Swee's side home from the AFC U23 Championship on Saturday evening after a 2-1 quarterfinal victory in Kunshan, China. It sets up a semifinal meeting for the Koreans with Uzbekistan, who thrashed Japan 4-0 in the last eight. Ulsan Hyundai midfielder Han burst through the tiring Malaysian defence to claim the winner in the 85th minute of an enthralling clash. Ong's team had fought back from going behind to an improbably early goal before losing in the most heartbreaking fashion. Cho Jae-Wan had given the Koreans the lead in the 12th second into the game. But N. Thanabalan's 67th-minute header pulled Malaysia level and looked set to take the teams into extra-time before Han's killer blow sealed the fate of both nations. Much of the talk before kickoff was of the historical significance of the game for a nation that has had more than its fair share of footballing disappointment in recent decades. … [Read more...] about Malaysia pipped by South Korea in AFC U23 quarterfinal

Ong Kim Swee hasn't had an easy ride over the last 18 months. Derided and discarded, he could afford himself a quiet smile after arriving home to plaudits and applause in Kuala Lumpur. The irony won't be lost on the man deemed unworthy of Malaysia's senior national team by one of his fiercest critics in Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim (TMJ), the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) president. Having been demoted by TMJ in March last year, Ong has steered the under-23 team to one of the finest results in recent memory, while his former squad descends further into farce. The contrast in fortunes between Ong's team of promising youngsters and the country's senior side is stark. In China, up against the best the continent has to offer in a competitive age group, Ong and his squad built on and surpassed the silver medal-winning performance from the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games last year. While there were no medals this time, a place in the quarterfinals of the AFC U23 Championship, and a … [Read more...] about Ong Kim Swee’s AFC U23 heroes prove Malaysia doubters wrong
It's never easy starting a team from scratch. And that is exactly what Carlos Alvarado, a union carpenter, and Tony Reyes, a burly electrician, set out to do in the spring of 2003 when they melded a ragtag group of kids into a team they would call "The Outsiders." They named the team after Reyes' favorite tag team duo - Scott Hall and Kevin Nash from the WCW, WWF and NWA, who won their last championship in 1990 - and began playing on the "baby fields" of Allerton, whose overused, underkept 47-foot mound and 60 base paths were often littered with used condems and empty Marijuanna bags. The name would come to have a deeper meaning, too: It reflected the treatment Reyes felt he received as a new coach in the Next Millennium League and the reception the kids often got from opposing teams and fans. "In the beginning we were dirt poor," remembers Reyes. "Our kids came from families who didn't have cars and couldn't write the big checks." The players were supposed to bring $5 to each … [Read more...] about Hard Work Pays Off! Inside the origins of Bronx baseball squad the Outsiders
Manchester United fans have called on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to give James Garner a chance. United have struggled this season, winning just two of their first eight Premier League matches and sitting in the bottom half of the table. Plenty of Red Devils stars are struggling with the likes of Fred, Marcus Rashford and Nemanja Matic among the players facing criticism. Solskjaer has said he will utilise the youth options he has and fans want midfielder Garner to be given a chance. It comes after the Red Devils posted a video of the goals their Under-23 team has scored this season, with Garner impressing in the montage. One supporter posted on social media: “Why tf is garner not being promoted he is better than matic” Another agreed, adding: “How are Garner and [Brandon] Williams not playing every week.” A third simply put: “They should give Garner a chance.” And a fellow United fan commented: “I think Garner should start against Liverpool he's … [Read more...] about Man Utd fans call for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to pick young player after U23 video is posted
The WAFU Cup of Nations is upon us again, and Nigeria, as usual, will be contenders for the title. The Super Eagles B side has been to the final at each of the three editions they have contested, winning once. In doing so, they have thrown up a number of players who have gone on to make a splash in the main Super Eagles team. Here are five of the best. Musa is by far and away the most prominent of the players who have used the WAFU Cup of Nations to launch their careers has been. In 2010, the virtually unknown Kano Pillars hotshot was a member of the squad that claimed Nigeria's only title so far. Musa, on his way to winning the Nigerian league Golden Boot, underwhelmed, scoring just twice as they went unbeaten throughout the tournament as host nation. His first goal came in the second group game, a 5-0 rout of Guinea that secured progress from the group stage. The second followed in the very next game, a 1-0 win over Burkina Faso in the semifinals. Musa went on to represent Nigeria at … [Read more...] about Who is Nigeria’s best player to have featured in WAFU Cup of Nations?
