Trump Says Georgia Election Law Is ‘Far Too Weak’

Trump rambles all over the place for the benefit of Sean Hannity. Photo: Fox News The word on the street in Georgia is that the state’s notorious new election law is helping Governor Brian Kemp regain some of the support that he lost in MAGA land by failing to back Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn Joe Biden’s 2020 victory in the Peach State. But don’t mention it to Trump himself, who told Sean Hannity the new law is namby-pamby when it comes to voter suppression. During a Monday-night appearance on Fox News, Trump called the bill “far too weak,” and mocked “the governor and others” for their fear of being “called racist.” Trump wasn’t very specific, but a couple of weeks ago he issued a statement that made it clear that his view of access to the ballot box is radical: (The crossed-out words are the name of a poll worker Trump and his allies have maligned; Montellaro didn’t want to contribute to the smear.) The former president seems to be confused about signature … [Read more...] about Trump Says Georgia Election Law Is ‘Far Too Weak’

Global Recovery Wipes Out Most of 2020’s Decline in Carbon Emissions

The downside of the boom. Photo: Florian Gaertner/Photothek via Getty Images Global carbon emissions are on track to surge by nearly 5 percent this year, according to the International Energy Agency’s latest forecast , a rebound that wipes out most of the decline caused last year by the pandemic. The IEA’s Global Energy Review 2021 predicted that carbon-dioxide emissions will rise to 33 billion tonnes this year, up 1.5 billion tonnes from 2020 levels, the largest single increase in more than a decade, as demand for coal, oil, and gasoline returns to pre-pandemic levels. That would reverse 80 percent of the decline seen in 2020 with emissions rebounding to just below 2019’s peak. “This is a dire warning that the economic recovery from the COVID crisis is currently anything but sustainable for our climate,” Fatih Birol, the IEA’s executive director, said in a statement . “Unless governments around the world move rapidly to start cutting emissions, we are likely to face an … [Read more...] about Global Recovery Wipes Out Most of 2020’s Decline in Carbon Emissions

Poll: 75% Of Republicans Want Trump To Play Prominent Role In GOP

A new Quinnipiac University poll found 75% of Republicans want former President Trump to play a prominent role in the Republican Party. The poll released Monday, just two days after the Senate voted to acquit the former president , surveyed 1,056 adults, with only 21% of Republican respondents noting their desire for Trump to not play such an outsized role in the party moving forward. The poll was conducted between February 11 and 14, as Trump’s impeachment trial was taking place. The survey shows Americans overall do not wish for Trump to play a prominent role in the GOP by a margin of 60-34%, with Democrats overwhelmingly at 96-3% and Independents responding at 61-32%. Eighty-seven percent of Republicans say the former president should be allowed to hold future office, with only 11% dissenting, while a majority of Americans, 55-43%, say he should be barred from holding elected office again. “He may be down, but he is certainly not out of favor with … [Read more...] about Poll: 75% Of Republicans Want Trump To Play Prominent Role In GOP

Republicans race for distance from ‘America First Caucus’

Republicans from various factions in the GOP are racing to distance themselves — and the party at large — from a band of hard-line House conservatives whose flirtation with forming a caucus espousing white nationalist views has ignited a firestorm of controversy on Capitol Hill. GOP leaders, anti-Trump centrists and vulnerable Republicans in battleground districts wasted little time in recent days denouncing the “America First Caucus,” whose stated purpose in a platform document included the defense of America as a nation “strengthened by a common respect for uniquely Anglo-Saxon political traditions." Republicans fret over divisive candidates

Republicans are sounding the alarm that divisive candidates running across the country could cost them key Senate and gubernatorial races next year. The party is concerned that disruptive contenders could hurt their chances of keeping Senate seats in Missouri, Alabama and Wisconsin and flipping the governor’s mansion in Virginia. Republicans are also nervously watching primaries for open Senate seats in North Carolina and Ohio and Democratic-held seats in Arizona and Georgia. Nearly a dozen GOP strategists and donors almost unanimously said former Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens (R), who resigned in disgrace in 2018 and is running for Senate, carries the most baggage out of any midterm candidate. ADVERTISEMENT But there are also concerns over Alabama Rep.
