Maybe it's not your idea of a Valentine's Day date but on February 14, the Stardust-NExT spacecraft will get within 124 miles of the comet Tempel 1 to collect photos and data about this solar traveler. The encounter will take place 209 million miles) away from Earth, almost on the exact opposite side of the solar system at the time of the encounter, according to NASA. The probe has been a workhorse for NASA. in 2004, when it was just known as the Stardust probe, it flew past the comet Wild 2 and later dropped by parachute into the Utah Test and Training Range its sample-carrying capsule. "Every day we are getting closer and closer and more and more excited about answering some fundamental questions about comets," said Joe Veverka, Stardust-NExT principal investigator at Cornell University.
