On my 18th birthday, I was diagnosed with genital herpes. Shame could not scratch the surface of what I felt as I left my gynecologist’s office, a million thoughts racing through my mind. Who had given it to me? Had I given it to anyone else? The only thing I could be sure of was that I was tainted—officially a real adult with a real disease. Carefully folded in my hand with the title hidden was a Herpes Handbook. I had seen similar pamphlets lining the walls for years, but I had never once thought I’d be taking one home. The little voice in my head was in a state of panic and confusion. I wasn’t the kind of girl who got a Sexually Transmitted Disease, I assured myself. I quieted my mind and tried to focus on reading the brochure that I believed would dictate the rest of my sex life. For the next 24 hours, I dedicated the entire text to memory and scoured the internet for everything I could learn about my newly acquired STD. In doing this, the shame I had … [Read more...] about What will you be giving your lover this Valentines Day? Probably herpes.

Last Updated Feb 15, 2011 5:15 PM EST Yesterday afternoon my daughter came home from Valentine's Day and counted her loot: In addition to the fold-up cards, the same kind I used to give out when I was a kid, she got 12 pieces of candy, five pencils, a pad of notepaper, a super ball and one rubber dinosaur. Her younger brother was watching her, spellbound, and he looked up at her with shining eyes when she casually slid the dinosaur in his direction. All this came in a gift bag that quoted John 3:16 and circled the letters in each part of that verse to spell out Valentine's Day. This is parochial school, after all. Valentine's Day, apparently, is the new Halloween. I had missed that development, so I sent my child to school with nothing more than those fold-over cards for her classmates. I doubt anyone noticed they were short one piece of candy. I also had the, er, privilege of being a parent volunteer for her class party. During the hour-long fete, organized by the super nice class … [Read more...] about Memo to Schools: Make Valentine’s Day Stop!
Looking for that perfect Valentine's Day movie to share with someone special? David Edelstein would just LOVE to offer some suggestions: I wanted to suggest some less-well-known recent love stories to watch this Valentine's Day, in theaters or on video, but nothing in the Nicholas Sparks Factory Warehouse stirred my fancy. That said, love, true love, transcends time, right? In the three films I picked, with a vengeance. I'll start with the most recent, from 2004: "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," a sci-fi comedy with Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet, that begins post-nasty-break-up and shows how impossible it is to purge the love of your life from your mind, even if the technology existed. And how you shouldn't want to, no matter how much you want to kill them. "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" (Official site) "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" - Available on Blu-ray/DVD (Universal); Also available via VOD and Digital Download (including Amazon, Google … [Read more...] about Classic romantic movies for Valentine’s Day

A workplace romance can work, but if it doesn't, remember you still have to work together. The amount of time you spend at work far exceeds the time you have to develop relationships when your work day is over, and according to a CareerBuilder.com survey, one result is that 38% of people develop dating relationships with coworkers. Working side-by-side on projects and in brainstorming sessions gives you a good idea of the way colleagues handle some of their toughest decisions. That time spent together can be the start of a relationship built on trust and respect. It’s a natural progression for single employees to take the foundation of a good coworker connection and turn it into a dating relationship. While some find true love at work, doing so can have its challenges, particularly if both people work in the same department. Before you put your career path at risk, check to see if your employer has a policy about dating coworkers. If there are no policies in place, use your best … [Read more...] about Just in time for Valentine’s Day: Finding true love at work

Valentine’s day is a Saturday night this year. Holy pressure. And for those of you going out on a first date that night, I’m nervous for you. That means you have bigger things to worry about than what wine to pick at dinner. So don’t complicate it. Once you pick the restaurant, go online at home and look at the wine list beforehand so at least you have a clue. When you get to the restaurant, order a glass of bubbly – champagne or Prosecco -- because it’s the perfect way to start dinner (and it will certainly take the edge off). Then talk wine. If you’re date doesn’t offer any suggestions or guidance, grab the sommelier. Lea-Faith Williams, owner of Let’s Talk Wine, confirmed that casually pointing to a price point on the wine … [Read more...] about Picking wine for a special Valentine’s Day date

Americans have a love-hate relationship with Valentine's Day.Some of us look forward to February 14 as an opportunity to enjoy our partner's company (and possibly spice things up in the bedroom). Others dread what they consider a commercialized holiday that can put unrealistic pressure on their relationships. It's clear that the bar is high: According to one online survey of more than 2,000 respondents, more than 65% plan to show affection on Valentine's Day, almost 85% believe that having sex is an important part of the holiday, and more than 60% say they will be disappointed if they don't have sex that day. With expectations like these, it's easy to set ourselves up for disappointment. Fortunately, it's possible to enjoy the day -- and night -- without creating hurt feelings or breaking the bank."Valentine's Day can serve as a reminder that it's so important to stop and appreciate the closest relationships in your life," couples expert and sex therapist Ashley Grinonneau-Denton said. … [Read more...] about Valentine’s Day: Managing the pressure
