German Chancellor Angela Merkel claimed that there is a unanimous agreement within the European Union on implementing a coronavirus vaccine passport, during a virtual meeting of EU member states on Thursday. The German leader said that “everyone agreed that we need a digital vaccination certificate,” following the meeting of European leaders. Merkel said that such a system could be implemented as soon as the summer, but claimed that the introduction of a vaccine passport “does not mean that only those who have a vaccination passport are allowed to travel,” according to the German broadcaster DW. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen praised Israel’s implementation of ‘Green Passes’, a system in which the government tracks and documents an individual’s vaccination history in order to facilitate travel or to attend synagogues, theatres, concerts, or to go to the gym. While there has so far been no agreement within the EU as far as a standardised system, von der … [Read more...] about ‘Everyone Agreed’ on Vaccine Passports, Says Merkel at EU Coronavirus Summit

Queen Elizabeth encourages COVID vaccinations, says it’s ‘quite harmless’
Queen Elizabeth II is encouraging people to get the COVID-19 vaccine, with the 94-year-old British monarch describing the process as “quite harmless, very quick.” She praised the U.K.’s national vaccination campaign during a video call with health officials released on Friday, comparing the massive effort to the way people banded together during World War II. “Well, once you’ve had the vaccine you have a feeling of, you know, you’re protected, which is, I think, very important,” the queen said. “And as far as I can make out it was quite harmless, very quick. And I’ve had lots of letters from people who’ve been very surprised by how easy it was to get the vaccine.” ADVERTISEMENT The Queen has spoken to health officials leading the deployment of the COVID-19 vaccine across the four nations of the UK. pic.twitter.com/Cululfsh4y — The Royal Family (@RoyalFamily) February 25, 2021 The queen and her husband, Prince Philip , 99, received their first dose of the … [Read more...] about Queen Elizabeth encourages COVID vaccinations, says it’s ‘quite harmless’
One dose of Pfizer vaccine offers significant protection for those who have had COVID: studies
Two new British studies published late Thursday found that a single dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine may offer significant protection for people who have already been infected with COVID-19. The studies, published in the weekly peer-reviewed medical journal The Lancet, provide further evidence for increased calls among experts to give only one dose to individuals that are already carrying antibodies against the virus. “This could potentially accelerate vaccine rollout,” r esearchers at University College London and Public Health England said in one of the studies . “With increasing variants (UK, South Africa, Brazil), wider coverage without compromising vaccine-induced immunity could help reduce variant emergence.” ADVERTISEMENT The Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines, the two inoculations currently approved for emergency use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), require two doses administered weeks apart. On Anniversary of First Confirmed Case, Brazil Marks 250,000 COVID Deaths
Brazil marked one year since its first confirmed case of the coronavirus on Thursday — the same day it recorded a quarter of a million deaths from the disease the virus causes. The country has averaged roughly 1,000 deaths from COVID-19 daily in recent weeks — similar to the peak of the virus in the country last July, according to statistics from the country’s ministry of health. President Jair Bolsonaro, who fell ill with COVID-19 last year, has repeatedly downplayed the seriousness of the virus and has said he will not be vaccinated against it. Brazil has confirmed more than 10 million cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, according to the Johns Hopkins University Coronavirus Resource Center. It has the second-highest death rate in the world, following the United States. Roughly five weeks after the first shot against the virus was administered in Brazil, the country has vaccinated about 3.6% of its population, according to Our World in Data, a research … [Read more...] about On Anniversary of First Confirmed Case, Brazil Marks 250,000 COVID Deaths
