NEW YORK -- Well over a thousand protesters were kept across the street from the Intrepid in barricades as throngs of police stood by to keep order on Thursday evening. They were there to greet President Trump, reports CBS New York, as he headed to a meeting with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull at an event at the USS Intrepid. Trump in NYC says Australia has better health care -- it has a universal coverage system The crowd booed and chanted "New York hates you!" over drums and tambourines. Some Trump supporters were also on hand to cheer him on. New York was the scene of several huge demonstrations against Trump in the early days of the Republican's presidency. Thursday's rally was a much smaller affair. Protesters in several tightly-controlled pens of demonstrators near the Intrepid held signs saying "Dump Trump." Some passing cars honked in support. "We want him to know the resistance remains, even in his hometown," said Ruthie Adler, 30, a Manhattan waitress. … [Read more...] about CBS News Logo Throngs of protesters crowd street as Trump visits New York City

New York City, your ships have come in. And leading the proud procession into New York Harbor on Wednesday was the USS Cole, a Navy destroyer that — like its port of call — was targeted by terrorists but could not be sunk. “People are interested in seeing the USS Cole because it has such a unique history,” said an excited Frank Iannazzo-Simmons, a Coast Guard petty officer 3rd class, who is based at Battery Park. Does it ever. A year before 9/11, Osama Bin Laden’s followers bombed the ship while it was refueling in Yemen, killing 17 sailors and carving a gaping 60 foot hole in the hull. The arrival of the Cole also marked the return of Fleet Week to the Big Apple after a year’s hiatus due to federal budget cuts. "Everybody I've spoken to in the Coast Guard, the Marines, the Navy, everyone's very excited to be back here,” Iannazzo-Simmons said. “It is a military tradition — and it's a … [Read more...] about Fleet Week back in New York City with impressive ships, enthusiastic sailors
The battleship forged with World Trade Center steel is coming home Friday. The USS New York returns to the Big Apple for Veterans Weeks 2013 four years after the ship was commissioned into active duty — and 12 years after the terrorist attack on the twin towers. “This Veterans Week is a homecoming for us,” said Capt. Jon C. Kreitz, the New York’s commanding officer. “We all respect and cherish the connection we have with this amazing and resilient city.” Kreitz, in advance of the ship’s arrival, invoked its motto: “Strength forged through sacrifice. Never forget.” The ship rose from the ashes of the downed 110-story skyscrapers, with 7.5 tons of steel salvaged from the trade center used in its bow. The ship, commissioned on Nov. 7, 2009, will arrive by cruising up the Hudson River past Ground Zero before docking at Pier 88 on the West Side of Manhattan. The battleship will be open for public visits on Saturday and Monday 8 a.m.-4 … [Read more...] about USS New York returns to NYC for Veterans Week

The ship, a San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock, has a crew of 360 - including dozens of New Yorkers. The ship's captain, Cmdr. Curtis Jones, is from Binghamton. Talk about a Red Scare. A Chinese restaurant chain will open its first U.S. eatery Monday on Fifth Ave., the ultimate symbol of American style and class. The chain has stolen the name of our national mascot, Uncle Sam. And its slogan, “Fortune Flavors the Bold,” is a foodie pun of the motto one borne by the USS Florida — an American warship. But that’s nothing compared to this foreign invader’s most aggressive act: It will dare to sell America’s iconic food, the hamburger. “That’s like me going to China and saying I can be a better Chinese chef,” says Queens construction worker Kevin Thomas, 35. He doesn’t know how right he is. After all, Uncle Sam’s is owned by Zhiming Bai, who has no background in feeding the masses. Rather, he made his millions in mining, cement manufacturing and real estate. But lest this burger battle begin a new Cold War, Bai has done his homework. The chain has hired Bellyfull … [Read more...] about Chinese burger chain Uncle Sam’s to open Monday in New York City
