Dr. Brian Kolski said he was woken up in the middle of the night last week when one of his patients called him, panicked. The patient had looked at an ECG reading on his Apple Watch and believed something was wrong. “He texted me the strip and it was completely normal,” Kolski said. “This was a healthy 45-year-old man who was playing around on his watch and went into a major panic.” Since Apple unveiled this new electrocardiogram app last week, Kolski has received at least 20 calls and e-mails from panicked patients who thought they were having atrial fibrillation or irregular heartbeat. Wristwatches seemed a bit passé until the Apple Watch came along about four years ago. Apple has almost single-handedly revived this category with a smartwatch that is now the planet’s number-one tech wearable. The Apple Watch remains a niche product, however, with a tiny fraction of the following that other Apple devices — such as the ever-hot iPhone — enjoy. Now, with a fourth generation of the smartwatch reportedly in the offing at a press event on Wednesday, Apple would look to widen the device’s appeal. I’m already sold. It took me a while to fall in love with this device, but I am now head over heels. It’s attractive, for sure, but my affinity for the watch largely hinges on the practical uses I have found for it. This is possible thanks to iPhone apps with highly functional Apple Watch companion apps. FITNESS The watch is a decent general-purpose fitness tracker. Hardcore athletes might quibble about this or that capability missing from … [Read more...] about More than a wrist bauble, Apple Watch bursts with practicality and potential
Wednesday, August 5, 2015 Game and Fish adds app for Apple watch Posted By Max Brantley on Wed, Aug 5, 2015 at 9:47 AM You know what they say: If you can afford to duck hunt, you can afford an Apple watch. Well, OK, maybe I just made that up. But I didn't make this up. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission has proudly unveiled an Apple watch app to go with a iPhone app already in use. It truly helps hunters comply with regulations in … [Read more...] about Game and Fish adds app for Apple watch
Deanna Recktenwald remembers feeling slightly out of breathe. But she chalked it up to being out of shape."I used to play volleyball at school. I was on the cheerleading squad and I was a gymnast for 13 years, but I hadn’t been active in a while," said the 18-year-old from Lithia. Then her Apple Watch pinged. "Take a breathe," the watch told her. A few minutes later, it pinged again. "Take a minute to breathe," it said. The watch’s health app also was tracking her heart rate, which spiked to 120 beats per minute, then 130. The last message from the watch said "seek medical attention." So Recktenwald told her mom, who was sitting with her in church last Sunday. Stacey Recktenwald, a registered nurse, monitored her daughter’s heart rate for about an hour and confirmed the results from the watch. She took her daughter to an urgent care clinic, where doctors and nurses seemed skeptical. "They didn’t believe us at first," Deanna Recktenwald said. "But then they took … [Read more...] about Seek medical attention,’ her Apple Watch said. It’s a good thing she did.
Jake Kanter, provided by Published 3:23 am, Wednesday, April 18, 2018 rawpixel.com/Unsplash Apple has removed from the App Store a controversial app that poses as a calculator and allows users to hide secret photos. The Calculator% app is popular with teenagers, but has been criticised by child welfare experts and is part of an investigation by British police. The app is also not available on Android, but a number of imitations can be downloaded. Private Photos (Calculator%) first gained attention in 2015 when US district attorney Pamela Casey's warning to parents about the app's true purpose went viral on Facebook. It has since appeared on danger lists for parents drawn up by digital safeguarding experts, and last week, a British police unit confirmed that the app formed part of an undisclosed investigation. Now, just days after Durham Police urged parents to be "vigilant" about Calculator%, the app has vanished from Apple. It is no longer available on the App Store … [Read more...] about Apple pulls app used by teenagers to hide photos behind a calculator amid police investigation
