WASHINGTON -- Exactly seven months before the 2016 presidential election, Russian government hackers made it onto a Democratic committee's network. One of their carefully crafted fraudulent emails had hit pay dirt, enticing an employee to click a link and enter her password. That breach of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee was the first significant step in gaining access to the Democratic National Committee network. To steal politically sensitive information, prosecutors say, the hackers exploited some of the United States' own computer infrastructure against it, using servers they leased in Arizona and Illinois. The details were included in an indictment released Friday by special counsel Robert Mueller, who accused the GRU, Russia's military intelligence agency, of taking part in a wide-ranging conspiracy to interfere in the 2016 presidential election. Petal officials have taken steps to be able to auction surplus equipment online, in addition to their regular in-person auctions. Members of the Petal Board of Aldermen recently voted to accept a Memorandum of Understanding with GovDeals, a liquidity services marketplace that allows government agencies to sell surplus and confiscated items or property on its website. City Clerk Melissa Martin said the city will continue to use Jeff Martin Auctioneers in Brooklyn, but the GovDeals online option will be there if needed. “It’s just another avenue if we want to put it online, if we think we can get more money from it (that way),” she said. “More people would see it online, because it’s a nationwide website. “And then if they buy it, they have to come get it – we don’t have to take it anywhere to them.
