Last Updated Jan 28, 2011 7:55 PM EST On the second to last trading day of the month, the US stock market gave back a whopping 60% of its gains so far this year. Some might see this as bad news, but I see it as good news and here's why.The reasons, though I might term them theories, for Friday's performance include protests in Egypt, disappointing GDP numbers, and technical support levels being broken. In only one week, CNBC has gone from bullish to now saying the Mideast will be the next market crises. What it really means It boggles the mind how short our memories tend to be. Sure, the stock market had been watch-grass-grow dull so far this year, and we tend to adapt our expectations to the recent past. But guess what? Markets are volatile! Last Updated Apr 27, 2011 4:42 PM EDT The US stock market closed yesterday only 3.0 percentage points below its all-time high on October 9, 2007. Did I jinx the rebound when I wrote about it a few months ago and started this "Stock Market Watch?" The 0.8 percent shortfall between this fund's performance and the Wilshire 5000 is due to:An expense ratio, currently at 0.07 percent annually. The fact that VTI doesn't include the smallest of the micro-cap stocks that were the best performing of US stocks. Media Returns By contrast, the S&P 500 index is still … [Read more...] about US Stocks Within 3 Percent of All-Time High
Last Updated Oct 13, 2011 7:22 AM EDT Stock market volatility is wreaking havoc on my emotions. Then again, since it's emotions that are at play here, my perception of the volatility increase may not be all that logical. So I set out on a long journey to determine if anyone could provide me with monthly stock market returns. After being told "no" many times, Bob Waid, Managing Director of Wilshire Analytics, gave me the data I've been looking for. He examined the monthly stock returns of the Wilshire 5000, which is the total US stock market. I was truly shocked by the results. Monthly stock returns Conclusion: On a monthly basis, stocks are not significantly more volatile over the past ten years. Annual returns Conclusion: On an annual basis, stocks have been more volatile over the past 10 years. My conclusion think stocks are now more volatile are:The index numbers are much bigger over the past ten years. In 1970, an 8 point change in the Dow equated to a one percent change. … [Read more...] about Stock Market Volatility
