America without Roe: More mental health concerns and a rise in abortion pills

May 21, 2022 by www.nbcnews.com Leave a Comment

In 2014, Amanda Furdge, then a single parent of a toddler son, was an unemployed college student who had recently moved home to Mississippi to escape an abusive relationship. She couldn’t afford to take care of another child, she said, so when she began experiencing pregnancy symptoms, she made plans to have an abortion. “I was already feeling the financial pressure of raising one,” Furdge, 34, said. “At this point, it wasn’t fair to my kid.” But by the time she was able to secure an appointment at an abortion clinic in Jackson, she was told she was too far along for an abortion in Mississippi. She was forced to carry her pregnancy to term and experienced depression and anxiety as a result, she said. Abortion advocates warn that Furdge’s experience could soon become more common. The leak this month of a Supreme Court draft opinion indicating that Roe v. Wade would be overturned has spurred many questions about the future of abortion rights in the U.S. If the … [Read more...] about America without Roe: More mental health concerns and a rise in abortion pills

Parris Island wages battles, not war, against climate change

(AP) — Rising seas are encroaching on one of America’s most storied military installations, where thousands of recruits are molded into Marines each year amid the salt marshes of South Carolina’s Lowcountry region. Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island is particularly vulnerable to flooding, coastal erosion and other impacts of climate change, a Defense Department-funded “resiliency review” noted last month. Some scientists project that by 2099, three-quarters of the island could be under water during high tides each day. Military authorities say they're confident they can keep the second-oldest Marine Corps base intact, for now, through small-scale changes to existing infrastructure projects. Maj. Marc Blair, Parris Island’s environmental director, describes this strategy as “the … [Read more...] about Parris Island wages battles, not war, against climate change

US sees risk of COVID supply rationing without more funds

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House is planning for “dire” contingencies that could include rationing supplies of vaccines and treatments this fall if Congress doesn’t approve more money for fighting COVID-19. In public comments and private meetings on Capitol Hill, Dr. Ashish Jha, the White House coronavirus coordinator, has painted a dark picture in which the U.S. could be forced to cede many of the advances made against the coronavirus over the last two years and even the most vulnerable could face supply shortages. Biden administration officials have been warning for weeks that the country has spent nearly all the money in the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan that was dedicated directly to COVID-19 response. A small pool of money remains, and the administration faces critical decisions about how to spend it. That means tough decisions, like weighing whether to … [Read more...] about US sees risk of COVID supply rationing without more funds

Accountant retires on cruise ships to avoid cost of land living

May 21, 2022 by www.chron.com Leave a Comment

When Angelyn Burk, a recently retired accountant, decided to crunch some numbers one evening last year, she made a stunning discovery: It would be cheaper for her and her husband to spend their retirement perpetually aboard cruise ships than to continue living on land. "This is how I want to retire," Angelyn, 53, decided in that moment. "Life is too short." She turned to her husband, Richard Burk, and said: "We can do this. Let's make cruise ships our home." To her delight, he was onboard. The couple had thoroughly enjoyed the nearly 10 cruises they had been on together in the past, and they have a mutual love for travel as well as a shared disdain for airports. They looked online and determined that, on average, they could string together voyages on various cruise ships for markedly less money than their collective cost of living on land. All they had to do was hop from ship to ship with some small breaks in between. "We calculated that we can probably live reasonably … [Read more...] about Accountant retires on cruise ships to avoid cost of land living

Sununu vetoes bill prohibiting school mask mandates

May 21, 2022 by www.sfchronicle.com Leave a Comment

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — Gov. Chris Sununu has vetoed a bill that would have prohibited New Hampshire schools from implementing face mask mandates. The bill vetoed Friday would have prohibited school boards or other public education agencies from adopting policies requiring students or members of the public to wear face coverings. “Just because we may not like a local decision does not mean we should remove their authority,” Sununu said in his veto message. “One of the state’s foremost responsibilities is to know the limits of its power.” Though Sununu also noted that the state prides itself on promoting local control in education, schools have not had free rein when it comes to the coronavirus. When state public health officials stopped recommended mask wearing in most indoor public spaces in February, Sununu said any schools that try to maintain mask mandates would run afoul of state laws requiring that each student be provided equitable access to education. Also in February, … [Read more...] about Sununu vetoes bill prohibiting school mask mandates

Lawmakers want money for National Park maintenance

May 21, 2022 by www.sfgate.com Leave a Comment

BAR HARBOR, Maine (AP) — Lawmakers from Maine and Colorado are calling on senators to increase funding for infrastructure maintenance on federal lands. Independent Sen. Angus King of Maine and Democratic Rep. Joe Neguse of Colorado chair the National Parks Subcommittee in their respective chambers. They said the National Park Service has a backlog of more than $21 billion in deferred maintenance and repairs. King and Neguse told Senate appropriators that failure to "adequately maintain this infrastructure is irresponsible and negatively impacts visitor access, enjoyment, and safety for the rapidly growing community of public lands visitors.” The lawmakers said the senators should ensure the fiscal year's appropriations bill includes “robust annual funding” for the U.S. Department of the Interior's maintenance obligations. … [Read more...] about Lawmakers want money for National Park maintenance

Ira Winderman: Based on how balls bounced, is a rivalry brewing for Heat?

May 21, 2022 by www.denverpost.com Leave a Comment

As he walked off the Miami Heat practice court Monday, veteran forward and converted hockey fan Udonis Haslem shook his head. “Not good. Not good,” he said. “The Lightning, that’s not good for us, right?” He was talking about the Florida Panthers’ second-round matchup against the Tampa Bay Lightning, the two-time-defending Stanley Cup champions. And he recognized an intrastate rivalry percolating because of the Panthers’ rise to contender status. The day after Haslem’s forecast, ahead of what turned into 0-2 direness for his adopted Panthers, another intrastate rivalry received a jolt, with the Orlando Magic winning the NBA lottery, the first pick in the June 23 draft now theirs. That, of course, is a big deal. And the Magic certainly have done big things with such selections before, turning previous No. 1 selections into Shaquille O’Neal, Penny Hardaway (through trade) and Dwight Howard. The Heat, by contrast, with the notable exception of Dwyane Wade, largely have … [Read more...] about Ira Winderman: Based on how balls bounced, is a rivalry brewing for Heat?
