Instead, the evening’s tasting menu, titled “California Soul,” celebrated the orchestra’s association with California’s most notable composer, John Adams; Los Angeles’ most irreverent genius, Frank Zappa; along with music from the movies and songs by the Doors and the Beach Boys, culminating in a confetti-falling, sing-along rendition of “Good … [Read more...] about Beat LA! Evangeline Lilly at the premiere of "Ant Man And The Wasp" in Los Angeles, California on June 25, 2018. (Apega/WENN.com) (WENN) — Evangeline Lilly has no sympathy for the Marvel men who complain about the superhero suits they have to wear after playing the Wasp in the upcoming "Ant-Man" sequel. The former "Lost star" rocked a skintight suit for her role as Hope van Dyne, aka the Wasp, in the new movie and admits she was terrified of donning the costume at first after listening to her male peers whine about their outfits in all the Marvel movies. "Do I have the most comfortable suit in the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe)? Or have men not had the life experience of being uncomfortable for the sake of looking good?" Lifting up a high heeled shoe, she laughs and adds, … [Read more...] about Evangeline Lilly has no idea why Marvel movies’ male stars complain about their costumes
Gabriel Byrne, Toni Collette and Alex Wolff in Hereditary. A24 Show us something new. But make it familiar. In our comfort-food era of movie sequels, prequels, reboots and expanded universes, this mantra is drilled into every aspiring filmmaker’s head. If you want to work in the 21st century studio system, originality isn’t an asset. It’s a liability. So we should be applauding Hereditary, Ari Aster’s critically beloved horror flick, which uses mounting dread and lacerating chills to illuminate the plight of a cursed family unwittingly beholden to demonic possession. Yet that nagging sense of déjà vu is hard to shake. Why doesn’t the movie feel fresh?Probably because this supernatural spooker is rife with references to other movies. Its slow-burn pacing, long dissolves, drone-heavy music, shots of silent screams, and even a measured zoom on a miniature model that then contains real people are straight out of The Shining. When a candle flame … [Read more...] about ‘Hereditary,’ ‘Under the Silver Lake’ and the Problem of Too Many Movie References
