By: KDKA-TV News Staff UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (KDKA) — Penn State University recently announced it is planning on using a phased approach to create an expanded on-campus learning environment for the Fall 2021 semester. A “full range of web classes” will still be offered, including remote synchronous and remote asynchronous classes. “However, with vaccines becoming more available and the expectation that public health guidelines will reflect progress, we are optimistic that we can begin to safely transition during the summer and move toward a full in-person experience this fall while doing all that we can to keep our students, employees and local communities as safe and healthy as possible,” said Penn State President Eric J. Barron. Penn State says it will use the summer semester to begin implementing some changes to prepare for the fall, including increasing the number of in-person summer courses and using large event or outdoor spaces to accommodate for social distancing. Governors lift COVID-19 restrictions despite risks of new spike
Governors across the country are lifting coronavirus restrictions, including mask mandates and capacity limits, despite warning signs ahead of a new spike from virus variants. The moves in several states are risky, given that while cases and hospitalizations have declined dramatically in recent weeks, they are still at extremely high levels, and are showing signs of ticking back up again. More infectious variants of the virus, particularly one first found in the United Kingdom, are adding to the threat of a new spike as they become more prevalent. ADVERTISEMENT While vaccinations are starting to help get the pandemic under control, they are not yet widely available, leaving a crucial period of perhaps a couple of months until increases in vaccine supply can make a larger dent in the pandemic and help ease a return to normal. The Biden administration on Friday raised new alarms about the need to keep restrictions in place. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) … [Read more...] about Governors lift COVID-19 restrictions despite risks of new spike
Solving the climate and energy crises: Mine the Moon’s helium-3?
Recently, U.S. Nuclear Corp. and Solar System Resources Corporation signed a letter of intent that will either change the history of the world or be just a footnote in humanity’s quest to develop clean, abundant sources of energy. Solar System Resources has agreed to provide 500 kilograms of helium-3 mined from the Moon to U.S. Nuclear Corp. in the 2028-2032 timeframe. According to a paper published by Jeff Bonde and Anthony Tortorello, helium-3 is an isotope that has been deposited in lunar soil over billions of years by solar wind. Roughly 1.1 million metric tons of the isotope exists on the Moon down to a depth of several meters. Twenty-five metric tons of helium-3, about a quarter of the cargo capacity of a SpaceX Starship, would suffice to fuel all the power needs of the United States for a year. ADVERTISEMENT The announcement does not reveal how Solar System Resource proposes to mine the helium-3. The company’s website is very heavy on breathtakingly … [Read more...] about Solving the climate and energy crises: Mine the Moon’s helium-3?
Biden administration buys 100,000 doses of Lilly antibody drug
The Biden administration on Friday announced an agreement to purchase 100,000 doses of Eli Lilly's monoclonal antibody cocktail that was recently authorized by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The move will increase the available supply of one of the few proven treatments for people with COVID-19. The antibody drugs are authorized for use in patients who are at high risk of becoming seriously ill but are not yet hospitalized. Under the agreement, the federal government will pay $210 million for the initial purchase of up to 100,000 treatment courses of the therapeutic, which is a combination of the drug bamlanivimab, which was authorized last November for high-risk COVID-19 patients, with a second drug known as etesevimab. ADVERTISEMENT The combination received emergency use authorization earlier this month , after data showed it reduced the risk of hospitalization and death by 70 percent. The agreement includes flexibility to purchase up to a total … [Read more...] about Biden administration buys 100,000 doses of Lilly antibody drug
