Decades after the U.S. stopped institutionalizing kids because large and crowded orphanages were causing lasting trauma, it is happening again. The federal government has placed most of the 14,300 migrant toddlers, children and teens in its care in detention centers and residential facilities packed with hundreds, or thousands, of children. As the year draws to a close, some 5,400 detained migrant children in the U.S. are sleeping in shelters with more than 1,000 other children. Some 9,800 are in facilities with 100-plus total kids, according to confidential government data obtained and cross-checked by The Associated Press. That number represents a drop of 14 percent over the last three years, but it’s still an impressive achievement for five youth sports coaches and soccer enthusiasts who held the first meeting of the American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) in a Torrance restaurant on Aug. 15, 1964. The quintet – Hans Stierle, Bill Hughes, Steve Erdos, Ralph Acosta and Ted McLean – had prior experience working with youth soccer leagues to go along with their enthusiasm for the project. There were rumors that FC Dallas manager Óscar Pareja was to interview for the head coaching position for the U.S. men’s national soccer team. Pareja, who is in his fifth season with FC Dallas, denied the rumors of the interview and is focused on the current MLS season. “I just want to make it clear, I am not being interviewed,” Pareja said during a press conference.The national team has been without a manager since last October, when Bruce Arena resigned after the U.S. failed to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Finally, there's movement in the Rochester's hiatus from professional soccer. If all goes as planned, the Rochester Rhinos men's soccer team will take part in the 2020 United Soccer League Division 3 season. Owners David and Wendy Dworkin announced Wednesday, via the club website, that the Rhinos have been approved by the United Soccer League to join the new third tier of U.S. Soccer, still a professional entity but one with lower requirements than USL Division 2, Rochester's former league. "....We have also determined that fielding the Rhinos in our current Division II league is not sustainable locally at this time," said the owners' statement. "While we are disappointed that the Rhinos will no longer be playing in Division II; we remain committed to keeping professional soccer in our community and building upon its rich history in this region."
