One of the nation’s largest private prison companies has enlisted the services of a twice-convicted former chief of staff to a key Democratic committee chairman as it attempts to fend off efforts to regulate and even eliminate its industry. The GEO Group hired the firm Avant Bishop Washington & Black (ABWB) in mid-May, according to a disclosure form filed last week. The firm is led by Lanier Avant, the former chief of staff to House Homeland Security Committee chairman Bennie Thompson (D-MS). Avant resigned that post in 2017 after pleading guilty to federal criminal charges for failing to file years of income taxes. That conviction, and another subsequent guilty plea to federal charges of making false statements, were apparently outweighed by other pertinent biographical information—namely, Avant’s ties to Thompson, for whom he also served as a staff director on the Homeland Security Committee. Underscoring the value of those connections to the GEO Group, … [Read more...] about Private Prison Giant Hires Twice-Convicted Ex-Aide to Top Democrat in Order to Fend Off Scrutiny

The president is a racist, in his words and his actions. Before you go clutching your pearls and extolling the virtues of “civility,” let me say this: Put a sock in it. This is not a new revelation, nor is it something that we can continue to ignore as though it were coming from a drunk uncle at the family barbecue. Bigotry is dangerous and, coming from our nation’s commander in chief, it can mean an inability to recognize individual humanity and a failure to act with moral authority in times of crisis. Every person talking about his clothes as he cheerfully bares his ass is part of the problem. On Sunday, he claimed that newly elected progressive Democrats “originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe” and “the worst, more corrupt and inept anywhere in the world.” And he told freshmen Reps. Ayanna Pressley, Rashida Tlaib, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar—outspoken … [Read more...] about Trump Is a Racist. If You Still Support Him, So Are You.
You Should Know About is a look at the products and brands that we at Scouted think should be on your radar and in your life ASAP. The world was passing me by. I was sitting as a passenger in my wife’s Toyota Corolla as we zipped along past dairy farms and cornfields. I was wearing earbuds and listening to a podcast about robots taking over the world. Then I fell asleep, mostly thanks to a neck pillow that seems like it was handed down from the gods of long car trips. The J-Pillow isn’t just for your neck. It was designed by a former airline attendant and supports your neck, your chin, and your head. It sort of looks like you are wearing a child’s plush toy, and I think that might be the inspiration here: It’s plush and soft like a pillow, but it has enough support that it doesn’t feel squishy. The result is that you don’t feel like your head is resting against a couch cushion, but it three-pronged design kept my head and neck from bending over and … [Read more...] about This Neck Pillow I Found on Amazon Supported My Head and Neck So Well That I Bought Two Extras
While immigration to Britain remains near record highs, modest reductions in the inflow from the European Union since the Brexit vote has led to bosses increasing pay and drawing more heavily on native workers. In a brief, comparatively little-publicised report on the behaviour of LinkedIn members published by the Telegraph, the business-oriented social network revealed that the number of users moving from Continental Europe to the United Kingdom has fallen by 30 per cent from 2016, when the British people voted for Brexit, and 2019.This reduction in foreign labour has been accompanied by around half of employers offering higher pay to prospective workers, to make them more enticing to British workers, with around two-fifths also offering better working hours. “There is evidence that businesses are responding to the talent shortages by increasing their focus on the workforce already here in the UK,” LinkedIn economist Mariano Mamertino conceded. “This … [Read more...] about Brexit Boom: Bosses Offering Higher Pay, Better Hours as EU Migration Falls
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will try to win business leaders to his side with an offer of tax cuts at the start of a crucial week in the U.K. general election campaign. Britain goes to the polls on Dec. 12 in a vote that could determine how -- or whether -- the country leaves the European Union. A slew of opinion polls in Sunday's newspapers all put Johnson's Conservatives well ahead of the opposition Labour Party. But the week ahead features several potential landmines for the premier: He'll take on Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn head-to-head on Tuesday, and the two men will appear separately taking questions from a TV audience on Friday. The week will start with the prime minister addressing the the annual conference of the U.K.'s main business lobby group, the Confederation of British Industry. It could be a tense moment, given the history of animosity between the CBI and the U.K.'s pro-Brexit campaign, which Johnson led. "Let's not beat around the bush, big business didn't … [Read more...] about Johnson offers business an olive branch as U.K. election revs up
