PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — It’s rare that rookies in Philadelphia become fan favorites before they ever play a game but Matisse Thybulle charmed the city instantly. Thybulle recently made new friends at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia including a 7-year-old Sixers fan in the fight of his life. “My name is Freddy and I am in first grade,” Freddy said. Seven-year-old Freddy Curley is a typical kid who loves to make jokes and laugh. “He is undeniably one of the most handsome boys most people have ever seen. They tell me all the time,” said Freddy’s mother Beth. “He loves to play basketball, likes sports a lot. About two years ago when I started watching the Sixers he just got real into basketball and ever since then its everything Sixers.” Freddy tells CBS3’s Pat Gallen that Matisse Thybulle is his favorite player because Thybulle visited him while he was in the hospital. Last month, Freddy was taken to CHOP with what his … [Read more...] about Sixers’ Matisse Thybulle Turns Fearful Day To Unforgettable For 7-Year-Old Battling Leukemia At Children’s Hospital Of Philadelphia

State regulators are investigating an incident in which a Muni train door closed on a woman’s hand, causing her to tumble onto the tracks. The California Public Utilities Commission confirmed Friday that it is reviewing the mishap, putting pressure on Muni to fix two recent safety issues with its new Siemens railcars. With Muni in the process of upgrading its fleet, the incident is shaking public trust at a crucial moment. For months, the agency has struggled to improve service, stop major breakdowns and get more trains on the street. The woman, whose name has not been released, got caught in one of the rear doors of an N-Judah train she was trying to board at Embarcadero Station at about 2:30 p.m. on April 12. The woman was unable to extricate herself as the train departed from the station, and she ran along with it for several feet before pulling her hand from the door and then falling onto the tracks, said San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency spokesman Paul Rose. … [Read more...] about State investigating injury of woman whose hand got stuck in Muni train door
TOKYO—Freelance journalist Shiori Ito shocked Japan when she went public in late May with allegations that she had been raped by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s close friend and biographer, Noriyuki Yamaguchi. This is a country where countless women might have said #MeToo, but, four months ago, few did. Yamaguchi publicly denied raping Ito and says the case is now closed. Ito, however, refused to back down and has written a book, Black Box, that explains her experience and urges other victims to come forward. And the coincidence of its publication on Oct. 20, amid the growing international furor sparked by the alleged abuses of movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, may now give Ito’s message real momentum. If you think things are bad in Hollywood, consider the way the system works here, where pigs protect pigs, including at high levels of government, to the point where women, no matter how brave, feel they have no recourse at all. After Ito was raped, she went to the police to … [Read more...] about Japan’s Big #MeToo Moment: You Think Hollywood Abuses Women? You Oughta See Tokyo.
Tom Hiddleston is a busy, busy man—so busy, in fact, that he’s barely able to squeeze in a proper meal. You see, the talented British actor is promoting a trio of projects: the upcoming John le Carré-adapted miniseries The Night Manager, Ben Wheatley’s gleefully anarchic head trip High-Rise, and the Hank Williams biopic I Saw the Light. We’ve convened at The Smith, a cozy restaurant in Lower Manhattan, primarily to discuss the latter film (our full interview will run later this week). Interestingly enough, the eatery is around the corner from Webster Hall, a concert venue set to play host to a hotly anticipated reunion show by LCD Soundsystem. And at said LCD show later that evening, Hiddleston’s best mate, Benedict Cumberbatch, could be seen dancing his heart out like no one was watching. When I mention the night’s festivities, Hiddleston’s face lights up. “Oh, I love them!” he says of LCD Soundsystem. The actor reveals there … [Read more...] about Tom Hiddleston on His Bond Moment in ‘The Night Manager’ Finale and Loki’s Future
