The Bruins have a clean slate and a chance at redemption – but it is not going to get any easier. After failing to get a win during nonconference play, UCLA football (0-3) will get to start fresh with the beginning of its Pac-12 schedule Friday. The Bruins are also coming off of their bye week, and freshman defensive lineman Otito Ogbonnia said the players took the time away from game planning to focus on their mechanics and finding a team identity. “Just getting a lot better fundamentally, tactically, … know who the team is as a whole,” Ogbonnia said. “We took, like, a day off I think. But it’s been good – we’ve been getting a couple practices in, so we’ve been working hard to get better.” The Bruins are committed to their youth, and the growing pains through the first three games of the season have been evident while UCLA has been losing by an average of 20.33 points per game and has not yet scored more than 21 points in a … [Read more...] about UCLA football looks to fix execution issues for beginning of conference play schedule

With Chip Kelly behind the wheel, UCLA football was expected to speed through the ranks of college football. One game against a mid-major program pumped the brakes on that plan. Behind their potential offensive backfield of the future, the Bruins (0-1) were unable to sustain any offense against the Cincinnati Bearcats (1-0), falling 26-17 on Saturday night. Even though Kelly’s offenses during his tenure in Oregon were known for their prolific output, UCLA only mustered 306 yards on 68 plays. The offense also produced four three-and-outs and two turnovers on downs. The second of those, on the Bruins’ penultimate drive, came after Kelly’s decision to go for it on 4th and 1 from his own 36-yard line. But true freshman quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson’s pass flew behind redshirt sophomore receiver Dymond Lee and off his outstretched hands. The Bearcats subsequently mauled their way down the field for running back Michael Warren’s third one-yard touchdown … [Read more...] about UCLA football opens Chip Kelly era with 26-17 home loss to Cincinnati

If only we had answers as well. This week, we got an official confirmation of what we already knew. The quarterback race was, and still is, between three candidates: Wilton Speight, Devon Modster and Dorian Thompson-Robinson. It took three weeks to get the public confirmation from the coaching staff. At the very longest, they can delay the decision only two more days as the Bruins face Cincinnati on Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Rose Bowl. There’s a lot that will finally be figured out about the Bruins on Saturday, from quarterbacks to running back to just how many linebackers have even survived until game day. The long wait for answers will end soon. As always, I welcome your questions for this weekly mailbag feature. The inaugural UCLA football spring game of the Chip Kelly era is in the books as the white team defeated the blue team 16-10 on Saturday afternoon. The Bruins only played two quarters, with both teams getting about 40 snaps each. Each squad had two quarterbacks who alternated possessions. Here are five observations from the game, which had a little bit of everything. 1. Austin Burton, game MVP The best quarterback on the field hasn’t played a single down for the Bruins. But Burton, a redshirt freshman, was responsible for two touchdowns and completed six of eight passes for 110 yards. Burton found freshman wide receiver Chase Cota for a touchdown on a third-and-goal play on the white team’s first drive, and ran for a 1-yard touchdown on a read-option play later in the game. The Newton, Massachusetts, native could have led scoring drives on his first three drives, but rising redshirt junior kicker Andrew Strauch missed a 38-yard field goal. That possession started with a … [Read more...] about UCLA football plays first spring game under Chip Kelly
