BOSTON (CBS) – An Uber driver has been arrested and charged with kidnapping after a disturbing incident in Brighton last week. Kamal Essalak, 47, of Acton was arrested Saturday on a warrant. Boston Police said a woman called them around 8:30 p.m. last Thursday in the area of Commonwealth Avenue. She said she had requested a ride and got into the car, which police said was being driven by Essalak. When Essalak stopped, the woman said she tried to get out but couldn’t because the child safety locks were on in both rear doors. “As the victim began to scream and bang on the glass in an attempt to draw attention to the unfolding situation, the suspect began to climb into the rear passenger area of the vehicle, laughing periodically,” Boston Police said in a statement. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Police say an Uber driver was robbed at gunpoint after asking a passenger to wear a mask. The 26-year-old driver picked up a man and woman around 8:30 p.m. on March 6 near the corner of 7th Avenue and West 33rd Street in Manhattan. BOSTON (CBS) — An Uber passenger claims her driver, 47-year-old Kamal Essalak, locked her in the back seat shortly after being picked up on Commonwealth Ave in Boston last Thursday night. Essalak pleaded not guilty to a single kidnapping charge then walked out Brighton District Court on Monday. “The driver said quote hey babe and said how this was going to be an hour-long ride when it was only around the corner,” said Suffolk County Assistant District Attorney Margaret Hegarty. (CNN) Olympic fencer Ryo Miyake took up a new job last year: delivering food for Uber Eats. Miyake, who won a silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics, put sponsorship money on hold after learning the Olympics would be postponed. His training stopped for several months during Tokyo's first state of emergency last spring so he started digging into his savings. As a result, Miyake turned to Uber Eats as a way to make extra cash and stay in shape during the pandemic. He's since resumed practice and the sponsorship money has come back, but the physical and mental challenges remain. "It's been very difficult. Two young teens have been charged in a carjacking that left an elderly Uber Eats driver dead on Tuesday. Police confirmed two young teenagers, aged 15 and 13, were formally charged Wednesday with crimes including felony murder after an alleged carjacking resulted in the death of 66-year-old grandfather Mohammad Anwar on March 23. The girls, whose identities have been withheld in light of their status as minors, allegedly hijacked Anwar’s vehicle. Authorities say the girls may have used a stun gun on Anwar, causing the loss of control that led to the fatal crash. Anwar’s car flipped as it traveled near Nationals Park, on the 1200 block of Van Street SE. Anwar was thrown from the vehicle onto the sidewalk. D.C.
