SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — On a gorgeous 76-degree day in the desert, Brendan Rodgers sat in the shade, looking fit and relaxed and bubbling with confidence as he discussed the season ahead. “You haven’t seen me, be me. I’m ready to be me and get out there and show people what I’m capable of,” Rodgers said Tuesday after the Rockies’ first full-squad workout of spring training. The Rockies would rejoice should that come to pass. Rodgers, after all, was the third overall pick of the 2015 draft out of Lake Mary High School in Florida. He received a $5.5 million signing bonus at age 18. At the time, Rodgers said he wanted to make the majors by age 21. He almost reached that goal, but so far, he’s been more about potential than performance. Since making his big-league debut on May 17, 2019, at age 22, he’s hit .196 with a .235 on-base percentage in 97 at-bats over 32 games. He has yet to hit a home run. Injuries, most crucially a torn labrum in his right shoulder that required … [Read more...] about Rockies’ Brendan Rodgers knows it’s time to fulfill his potential

Exclusive: After 2020 Gains, Kevin McCarthy Eyes House GOP Majority, Speaker’s Gavel in Midterms
House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy has a fresh spring in his step after the Republicans defied the odds and professional political prognosticators by picking up 15 seats in the 2020 congressional elections. McCarthy, who has his eyes on the majority in November 2022, approached the 2020 congressional elections differently than Republicans in recent history have traditionally targeted congressional electoral efforts, and his moves paid off—and not only infuriated but befuddled the beltway pundit class. For the first time since 1994, in 2020 no GOP incumbent running for reelection lost. Meanwhile, McCarthy blew away fundraising records previously set by former House Speaker Paul Ryan—astonishing since he did it from the minority. Usually, House political leaders do better raising money from the majority. That’s not to mention the most significant development which is a freshman class entering Congress in 2021 that represents perhaps the most diverse in party history with the most … [Read more...] about Exclusive: After 2020 Gains, Kevin McCarthy Eyes House GOP Majority, Speaker’s Gavel in Midterms

Children’s hospitals, pediatricians urge Biden to prioritize youth mental health
Children’s hospitals and pediatricians are calling on the Biden administration to prioritize children’s mental, emotional and behavioral health in addressing the COVID-19 pandemic. The Children’s Hospital Association (CHA) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) launched an awareness campaign on Wednesday to ask the administration and lawmakers to provide more funds to programs to address the escalating crisis among children and youth. The group is seeking increased funding for existing mental and behavioral health programs, through the Department of Health and Human Services’s Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and Health Resources and Services Administration. ADVERTISEMENT They also think Congress should provide new funding for activities at the state and local level to support children, like telehealth, training for crisis response and school-based services. The digital advertising campaign is expected to run for several weeks with an … [Read more...] about Children’s hospitals, pediatricians urge Biden to prioritize youth mental health
Regulators keep close eye on Facebook’s deal with Australia
Facebook and Australia’s eleventh-hour agreement Monday letting users resume sharing news links on the platform is being closely watched by regulators around the world as a possible model for requiring the social media giant to pay for news content on its site. The relationship between the power of tech platforms and the steep decline in news media revenue has become a key issue for lawmakers in the U.S. and abroad, with many proposing changes that would strike at the digital ad market dominance of social media firms. Lawmakers and regulators alike are now keeping a close eye on how things pan out in Australia, the first major economy to force the news payment issue with Facebook. ADVERTISEMENT Facebook last week blocked user access to news links in Australia in response to legislation making its way through the Australian Senate that would require digital platforms to pay publishers for news content that appears on their sites. If platforms and publishers failed to agree … [Read more...] about Regulators keep close eye on Facebook’s deal with Australia
