French fishermen were filmed firing flares and throwing frying pans at British boats in a revival of the so-called ‘Scollop Wars’ in the English Channel, amid ongoing disputes between the two nations over post-Brexit fishing rights. Approximately 20 French ships surrounded two British fishing boats, the Girl Macey and the Golden Promise, at around 1:30 am on Monday, off the coast of Normandy. Members of the French crews were caught on film throwing objects, oil, and firing the flares at the British. The violence on the sea has reportedly been escalating over the previous weeks, with the skipper of the Golden Promise, Brian ‘Winkle’ Whittington telling The Sun : “I was expecting it this time, they only do it in the dark. We can’t use the radio when they do it as they just talk over us instantly, so I couldn’t check on Scott to see how he was.” “We were about two miles apart and I had two or three boats around me. Scott had 15 around him, they were throwing oil at him and … [Read more...] about WATCH: French Fishermen Fire Flares, Throw Frying Pans and Oil at British Boats

(CNN) You can do quite a bit in 100 days -- begin learning French; train your puppy; prepare for a 10K. But there's one thing you can't do: transform a cruel and unforgiving world. Judging from the Biden administration's first 100 days -- an unrealistic and unrealizable metric by which to judge a presidency -- there's no danger of that happening. I've worked for a half dozen administrations, both Republicans and Democrats, and have never seen one where foreign policy priorities seem so influenced by a domestic agenda and the politics that drive them. Whether this pattern holds … [Read more...] about The main idea behind Biden’s global strategy
The Biden administration is expected to lay out more details for a domestic road map for how to achieve its climate goals and put more pressure on foreign countries to increase their own commitments in the coming months. Following its updated commitments under the Paris Agreement, the administration says that more details are on the horizon following the announcement of the goal of cutting emissions at least in half by 2030. Observers say they also expect more countries to make announcements between now and a United Nations summit in November. The loose outline of the U.S. climate plan leaves the administration with opportunities to work with Congress on details of its implementation while seeking to lead by example on setting emissions targets. ADVERTISEMENT In its formal Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) plan submitted to the U.N. , the U.S. government says it sees “multiple paths” to achieve its goal. “The United States federal and subnational governments have … [Read more...] about US seeks to lead on climate while finalizing details on plan
In 1936, Germany’s Deputy Fuhrer Rudolph Hess asked British Lord Castlereagh, “Why do you not have Winston Churchill in your British Cabinet? Then we should know you meant business.” The question was largely rhetorical. Churchill had been a lonely voice in the political wilderness for many years, his warnings about the Nazi menace falling on deaf ears. The next phase of the World Health Organization (WHO) investigation into the origins of the coronavirus pandemic must be more scientific and data-driven, a group of scientists wrote in an open letter to the WHO on Friday. China should not be permitted to veto the team members chosen for the next WHO-led investigation and the team should be granted full access to related data such as medical records and biological samples, signers of the letter wrote. The letter is authored by various international scientists and academics and co-organized by Jamie Metzl, a WHO advisor and senior fellow at the Atlantic Council think tank. A WHO-led team released a report in March on the origins of the pandemic, but the team was denied access to important data. The WHO’s director-general, the White House, the U.S. State Department and 13 other countries expressed concern that the WHO team’s report was compromised.
