(CBS Local)- After occupying a different place in the calendar last year due to the pandemic, the Kentucky Derby is back in its normal spot, the first Saturday in May. This year’s race will also see the return of fans to both the infield and the grandstands at Churchill Downs. Track officials announced in early April that about 15,000 fans will be allowed in the infield while the grandstand will be kept to reserved seating at 40-60% capacity. The favorite heading into Saturday is Essential Quality (2-1), trained by Brad Cox with jockey Luis Saez aboard. The gray colt, sired by Tapit, has won each of the five races he’s started thus far in his career beginning with the Maiden Special Weight race as part of last year’s Kentucky Derby undercard. MEDFORD (CBS) — A teenager has been charged with drugged driving in a fatal crash in Medford that also killed a dog and left two other people seriously hurt. The 17-year-old driver was under the influence of a drug while he was driving a Toyota RAV4 down Spring Street Sunday afternoon and ran down a woman, investigators said Monday. He has not been identified because of his age. The Kenner Police Department said Dernell Nelson, 35, of LaPlace, is charged with first-degree murder in the slayings of Hermania Ellsworth and Charles Davis. Investigators said he may also be connected to the slaying of another married couple found dead three weeks after the death of the first couple. The first killings occurred on June 17, 2010, when authorities found Ellsworth and Davis dead from multiple gunshot wounds inside her vehicle, which had crashed into a tree. BOSTON (CBS) – On Wednesday, attorney Ted Wells finally released the findings of his investigation into under-inflated footballs used by the Patriots in the AFC Championship Game back in January. The 138-page report concludes that some Patriots employees likely deflated footballs and quarterback Tom Brady may have known about it. His conclusion and investigation are backed up by testimony and scientific study, but the latter part of that sentence is starting to draw serious attention.
