Samuel Stebbins, Grant Suneson and Michael B. Sauter 24/7 Wall Street Published 7:30 AM EDT Oct 22, 2018 There are nearly 20,000 villages, towns, and cities, across the nearly 3.8 million square miles that comprise the United States. More than 1-in-10 Americans move each year, and suffice it to say, when it comes to choosing a place to settle down, they have options. For many, deciding on a place to call home is influenced by subjective or personal variables like climate, proximity to friends and family, or a job opportunity. For those with greater flexibility, however, there are dozens of objective factors to consider, as overall quality of life can vary considerably from town to town and city to city. In an ideal community, the streets are safe and those who want a job have little difficulty finding one. That being said, its always gratifying when a publication that was once taken as serious as The Economist bestows that honor upon your city, as U.S. News & World Report did with Colorado Springs a couple weeks ago. “Colorado Springs might not jump off the map as an economic or cultural hub the way larger metro areas like Denver do,” observes the publication. “But in a quieter, gentler way, Colorado Springs has much to offer, including a low cost of living, a low unemployment rate and a variety of recreation and entertainment options.” What’s odd, though, is that this same publication … [Read more...] about The Springs is now the most desirable place to live in the U.S., but not necessarily the best
Samuel Stebbins and Evan Comen 24/7 Wall Street Published 1:31 p.m. UTC Jun 14, 2018 Where Americans live can have a considerable impact on their quality of life. In some U.S. cities, everyday comfort and happiness is much harder to attain than in others. Quality of life is subjective, and difficult to measure. Still, there is a wide range of quantifiable factors that can impact quality of life in a given area. Affordability, safety, job market strength, quality of education, infrastructure, average commute times, air quality, and the presence of cultural attractions are just a few examples of factors that can influence overall quality of life. 24/7 Wall St. created an index with measures in eight categories -- crime, economy, education, environment, health, housing, infrastructure, and leisure -- to identify the 50 worst cities to live in. Not confined to a single region, the worst cities span the country from the South to the Midwest and from New England to the Pacific coast. … [Read more...] about Are these the worst cities to live in? Americans say Austin, Texas, is the best place to live in the United States, according to an annual survey done by U.S. News & World Report. For the second year in a row, Austin came out on top among the 125 largest metropolitan areas. The 2018 survey measures a city’s affordability, employment market and quality of life. Behind Austin are Colorado Springs, Colorado, Denver, Colorado, Des Moines, Iowa, and Fayetteville, Arkansas. Rounding out the top 10 are Portland, Oregon, Huntsville, Alabama, Washington, D.C., Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Seattle, Washington. “When deciding on a place to settle down, it’s important to understand that where a person lives can impact their well-being,” said Kim Castro, executive editor at U.S. News. Colorado Springs was named second best place to live in the US.
