Column: Tom Ricketts breaks his silence on the Chicago Cubs rebuild, saying the team is ‘making progress’
The Chicago Cubs are playing out the string in the 2022 season, just as they were doing this time last yea after selling off their stars. It’s something fans are getting used to again after six straight years of watching contending teams, and something most fans expect will happen again next August. So what’s the plan? Know one really knows but Cubs Chairman Tom Ricketts and team President Jed Hoyer, and neither is providing specifics. But as the Cubs prepared to go under the national spotlight Thursday in the Field of Dreams game in Dyersville, Iowa, Ricketts broke his silence on the rebuild. “I’d be the first to acknowledge this is not the type of baseball Chicago Cubs fans deserve,” Ricketts said in a statement to the Tribune. “Our decision last year to move away from Cubs players who brought us a World Series title was tough, but we have a plan to return to championship contention by building the next great Cubs team around a young core of players augmented by free … [Read more...] about Column: Tom Ricketts breaks his silence on the Chicago Cubs rebuild, saying the team is ‘making progress’
Newhouse’s primary success rare among GOP impeachment voters
SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — The 4th Congressional District in Washington state is a land of snow-capped volcanic peaks and lush irrigated orchards that produce most of the nation's apples. It's also home to one of the few Republicans who voted to impeach former President Donald Trump and then won his next election. U.S. Rep. Dan Newhouse was one of 10 Republicans who voted to impeach Trump last year, and is one of only two to beat back GOP challengers this year. Newhouse was the leading vote-getter in the race for his seat in the Aug. 2 Washington primary election, despite withering criticism from Trump and a Trump-backed challenger. Meanwhile, U.S. Rep. David Valadao, R-Calif. - who like Newhouse ran in a top-two open primary - also prevailed two months ago. U.S. Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Wash., who also voted to impeach Trump and represents the Vancouver area, conceded to Trump-backed challenger Joe Kent on Tuesday night. Analysts say Newhouse had a couple of advantages … [Read more...] about Newhouse’s primary success rare among GOP impeachment voters
Clinton initiative’s NYC return includes Andres, Queen Rania
NEW YORK (AP) — World Central Kitchen founder Jose Andres, Jordan’s Queen Rania, BlackRock CEO Larry Fink and “Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda will help relaunch the Clinton Global Initiative in September, when the gathering of international dignitaries returns after six years. The two-day meeting Sept. 19 and 20 in New York is built around a theme of “The Business of How," looking to create partnerships between political, business and philanthropic leaders. “We called the CGI community back together this year because we face an urgent and historic moment,” former President Bill Clinton said in a statement Thursday. “The global community is confronting several existential challenges, including climate change, new threats to our health, worsening economic inequalities, and a global refugee crisis.” The Clinton Foundation's annual gathering was called off in 2016 during former Sen. Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign, when questions were raised about the appearance of … [Read more...] about Clinton initiative’s NYC return includes Andres, Queen Rania

That hasn’t stopped him from performing like an incoming starter for the Raiders. After all, when you might understand a new offensive system better than anybody coming into training camp, there’s an edge that established confidence. “I think my biggest focus right now is just to compete every single day with these guys, push all of them as much as I can and help them along the way and just compete and play ball,” said Stidham, who spent the first three seasons of his career in New England. “I mean that’s all I can focus on right now, it’s all I can control. I’m happy to finally be healthy and just be back out there on the field and just playing football, so it’s a lot of fun.” Stidham had plenty of fun in his first outing with the Raiders, completing 8 of … [Read more...] about Stidham relishing role with Raiders, playing for McDaniels
Topgolf tees off job auditions for Centennial location
CENTENNIAL — For the hundred or so people who hoped to land a job Monday at the Topgolf entertainment complex, set to open in August , there weren’t any resumes, nice suits or fancy shoes. Instead, the conference rooms at the Embassy Suites at the Denver Tech Center were filled with cheering, shouting and clapping. Topgolf plans to hire 450 people for its new facility at East Easter Avenue and South Havana Street in Centennial over the next few weeks. Topgolf’s indoor center offers golfing games for all ages and skill levels with advanced technology to track players’ shots. “We don’t hire people on job experience, but how they react with others,” said Caroline Jerome, communication specialist at Topgolf. Applicants participated in team-building challenges, created plans for special Topgolf events and did X-Factor style panel interviews. They still did one-on-one interviews, but those carry less weight in the process, Jerome said. Kayla Ayers, 19, of Denver said her … [Read more...] about Topgolf tees off job auditions for Centennial location
