University of Colorado Boulder football player La’Vontae Shenault was ticketed for speeding and driving with a revoked license in Boulder County this month, the third traffic case the Buffs’ wide receiver has picked up less than a year. Shenault, 19, was ticketed for driving 25 to 39 mph over the limit and driving with a restrained license on Feb. 1 by Colorado State Patrol in Boulder County, according to online court records. Online court records show Shenault was reportedly driving 93 mph in a 65 mph area on U.S. 36 between Boulder and Denver. Because his license was restrained for an alcohol-related case, Shenault could be facing up to a year in jail and a fine of up to $1,000 on the driving with a restrained license charge, a misdemeanor. The case is set for an advisement hearing on March 4, according to online court records. Colorado lawmaker to withdraw Indian-mascot bill
A state lawmaker plans to withdraw a bill that would legislate public high schools’ use of American Indian mascots, saying she has already achieved her goal of igniting community discussions over whether the mascots are appropriate. Sen. Suzanne Williams, D-Aurora, also said Wednesday that her measure isn’t needed anymore because the Colorado Indian Education Foundation plans to work with schools that have Indian mascots. “I fervently believe we can build on our knowledge and expand our appreciation of our Native American ancestors,” said Williams, who is one-quarter Comanche. Williams ignited a firestorm of controversy last month when she introduced a bill that would have required all public and charter high schools with Indian mascots to get approval from the Colorado Commission of Indian Affairs. The 2021 America East men’s basketball tournament will determine which team gets an automatic bid to the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. Nine of the conference’s 10 teams made the tournament, which will begin Feb. 27 and run through March 13. This time, the brackets are set up into two pods and winners of each pod take on the Nos. 1 and 2 seeds, respectively, in a bid to go to the conference finals. The New Hampshire pod includes New Hampshire, UMass Lowell and Stony Brook. The Hartford pod includes Hartford, Binghamton, Albany and NJIT. The first rounds will be played in New Hampshire and Connecticut, respectively. The rest will be played at campus sites. There will be no fans in attendance for any of the tournament games due to coronavirus restrictions.
